Just purchased the Lansky at a local store here, I am not impressed. How does the Sharpmaker differ?

The sharpmaker's ceramic rods fit into the plastic base at preset angles, eliminating the need to mess around with clamps and honing oil. It's a better system -- simpler, easier to use.

I've got both the SharpMaker 204 and the whole dimanond Lansky setup. I use the Lansky for reprofiling edges and grinding out chips, and the SharpMaker for making my knives...... sharp. The SharpMaker, IMHO, puts a much better edge on a knife. It takes more skill than the Lansky, but the rewards are there.

I use the Razor Edge Systems Deluxe Pro Kit with great success. I've lined the contact edges of the guides with one layer of duct tape so as to not scratch the blades. Anyone know how this compares with the Sharpmaker and/or Lansky ones?

I was amazed at how simple the Sharpmaker was to use, and how effectively it sharpened even cheap knives with dull edges. For touching up good knives with slight dulling, it is all you ever need.

My only disappointment is that, having sharpened all my knives so quickly, and not needing to resharpen, say, my Sebenza or BM 730 very often, I don't get to play with it much anymore.

I understand that real damage to the edge requires something more along the lines of a diamond hone, and even after the Sharpmaker does its bit, a strop might not be a bad idea for the very finest edge.
