Lansky VS Spyderco Sharpmaker VS other options

I currently have a Lansky bracket clamp sharpener with 5 different stones. The lowest angle it will sharpen to is 17 degrees. I just bought a Spyderco Para Military in D2 and I believe that the edge angle is 15 Degrees from the factory. I use the knife for carving and would like to keep it as sharp possible. Should I get a Sharpmaker to maintain the 15 degree angle or are there other options such as a stone?

I used to have a Lansky - even with the fine and extra fines stones, I couldn't get knives as sharp as I can with the Sharpmaker.

Go with what you have and learn to use it, or expand your tools. Up to you and your checkbook frankly.

Hi,

Those angles might be accurate, or they might not be. On both the Lansky or the Spyderco. Plus or minus a degree or two is no big deal for the factory. It might be a bit of work for you if they don't match though.

I just got a Lansky myself a couple of weeks ago. Been sharpening free-hand for a lot of years. Just wanted to try one I guess. I got to agree with jeep, I can do better by hand. But it still puts a good working edge on. And it was really fast to use to re-profile a couple of cheapie knives I've got around here.

Get a Sharpmaker if you have the money. Just don't be too surprised if it has a different angle also.

Are you sure about that angle? 15 degrees seems pretty steep. Usually on thin kitchen knives and such. Most Spydies have a 20 or 25 degree angle. I would check with them at the Service Center.
