Hi,
Do you own any sharpening equipment?
Have you sharpened anything before?
Which lansky, the 4 stone diamond or the 5 stone?
What store?
Why do you want to buy one, which of its features are important to you (did you make a list :))?

Just something to think about, but for $70 you could buy a "generic" edge pro type sharpener ($20), along with a full set of replacement diamond stones for $50 (#80 / #120 / #200 / #400 / #600 / #500 / #800 / #1000 / #1500 / #2000 )

I have a smiths two stone cositant angle sharpener and i wanna upgrade. The one im looking at is the deluxe 5 stone and a sapphire, i just want really sharp blades and a good looking edge and thanks for responding and i plan on buying this system from blade hq

When I first started sharpening, I took the recommendations of a knowledgeable salesman: Lansky kit with 3 (regular) stones + a diamond XC hone + stand to hold it. That combination will produce sharp edges, esp. of you use the 'marker trick' mentioned often here on Bladeforums. I added the XF and Sapphire stones later, which are nice (if your budget allows).

Yes, for the money it is a good setup but make sure that you get a set with the original style clamp and not the one with the rubber inserts.

And.... you can easily make your own diamonds stone / sandpaper / polishing tapes holders. Not only because it is dirt cheap but also because they work better and faster.

I made these from 12x18mm wood, 4mm rod, 5x20mm aluminum strip and 2.5x25mm aluminum strip. Since I use 4mm rod, I can also use these with my KME system.

I use the ones with the 5x20mm with sandpaper and 3M diamond lapping films and the one with the 2.5x25mm strip with double sided diamond stones.
The total cost for the materials for the 5 holders including two double sided diamond stones (150, 400, 600 and 1000 grit) is less than € 20.-
Since these are larger than the original Lansky stones, they work a lot faster and so far, the Chinese diamond stones perform a lot better than the original Lansky diamond stones.

You can find the diamond stones on eBay by searching for: Double Side Diamond Plate Ti Titanize Knife Sharpening Stone
I just tape them to the holder which works perfectly.

I get great shaving edges with my lansky 3 stone set + a super fine stone. Pretty inexpensive, but turns out great results. I prefer not even using the stand, because I can flip the T-clamp around in my hand, which is especially nice for getting off that pesky burr - but to each their own. If you go with it, I recommend putting a piece of electric tape on the inside of each jaw of the clamp so the metal doesn't scratch your blade, and you don't have to stick cardboard or folded paper between your blade and the clamp.

I have went through a few different sharpening "systems" and techniques, but always come back to the Lansky. I am sure it's not the best way to sharpen, but it does exactly what I want. I like a toothy edge that is sharp enough to shave with. I can get this most times with the medium stone, the fine stone, and a few seconds on a leather strop loaded with green compound. Every few months I think about getting the diamond stone system, but just haven't done it yet. After using the Lansky system for a few years, my technique looks nothing like the original directions that are included, but my biggest tip is- secure the guide! I just clamp mine in a vise on my workbench, as I tried the handheld method for a while and didn't get very good results.
