Got a question for you good people - i got a CR Sebenza last wkend, and it has a black para cord lanyard on it, the 1 w/the hangmans knot - i have put a lanyard on a couple of my knives (ie-emerson CQC7 and spyderco delica, and my gerber mk 1 and 2) put it on the folders for looks i guess, and the fixed too - but question: what real purpose does it serve - it looks neat on some knives, the seb looks naked w/out it, but what are ya suppesed to do w/it? untie and form a wrist loop?(would ya have time if ya needed it??) just to have some para cord available for ?? what is it for?????? i agree it looks great but what is its real purpose??????

thanks and have a good 1

I can think of a pretty good list of reasons...but the absolute best is this scenario. $300-500 pocketknife, a boat, 40 ft deep water.

With a tip-up knife like the Sebi, it can serve as an aid in quickly withdrawing the knife from a clip-carried pocket position, since it's something to grab unto.

The previous suggestion also is frequently given.

I've never found the lanyard very useful in a tip-down carry situation.

Hi Vet95LT1 (talk about a difficult handle!).

I have also thought about the lanyard when I started to browse the different forums. Some MT:s had them and I tried one on my spyderco Delica. It looks so good!

Ok, now I had to find a reason to have it on. It wasn´t to hard. It looks inconspicuous when it, or a small part of it, is hanging out from a (back-) pocket. Draws less attention than a shiny ss clip. It also aids in comfort when I align it with the handle.

Most importantly it doesn´t hinder the function of my knife.

Well, just some of my thoghts on the subject.

As it exists on the Sebenza, I think it is more accurately called a fob.

A fob has use as has been described in aiding the withdrawl of the knife and the appearance.

A lanyard, on the other hand, can do the above, but it also is an aid in securing the knife to your person. As has been mentioned, over water, or over deep snow, or heights. On a fixed blade primarily, and some folders, a lanyard can be used to increase the chopping power of a knife. Hold onto the knife with the front two fingers, the last two holding the lanyard, wrap the remaining lanyard around the hand to fix it to some degree, you have now added an inch or two to the functional length of your knife, and maybe some chop.

Knotted, the cord is right handy for getting the knife out of the pouch I usually carry it in. Unknotted and looped around the wrist, it saves some disasters where you absolutely do not want to drop the knife.

Case in point: Me trying to strip some wire from the top of a ladder. Put in down on the top rung and then bumped it off by mistake, causing the knife to skydive a dozen feet to the tarmac. Missed my dad by a couple of feet but it probably wasn't good for his blood pressure...

I've made a few fobs for my Spyderco Endura and Delica using black paracord. It works great in retreiving the knife from your pocket by pulling the cord. If the pocket clip is on the butt end of the knife (tip up), the fob does serve a purpose.
