Lanyard fobs

I'd like to get some thoughts on fobs for Becker lanyards - what do you guys use for fobs? Buy them or make them? I'm not into skulls, and all that goofy 'mall-ninja' stuff. My little fire starters & strikers are in a separate kit; my old (Camillus) BK7 lanyard just had a knot at the end. I'd like to do something new, maybe a little round "Ethan head", that's "shiny on top"? :D :p

ps: I'll have an identical lanyard & fob on the Remora I'll give my son when he bridges to Boy Scouting this April, so it'll need to be somewhat 'family oriented'.

Since your son is a scout, I recommend pairing some knots. You can start with the basic lanyard knot - add in a chinese knot or walker knot.

You can also knot over your base lanyard to add decoration / size adjustment. I have done mine with a sinnet / cobra stitch - but for a nicer effect you could use a turk's head. Your son should know how to tie a turk's head - some scouts use them as a slide for their neckerchief.

there are tons of great online youtube videos and sites showing all the basic knots; google "paracord knife lanyards" and you'll see tons of great ideas. google "stormdranes blog" for even more. post a pic of anything you like and i'd be happy to identify the knots for you and point you where a tutorial has already likely been done for it!

Thanks guys; we got a couple of the old books out, and we're going to have a member of the local Sea Scouts come over and teach our boys some different knots. We use a few for our outdoors activities, but the Sea Scouts really do put a lot of different knots to use.

After a little more research, I realized a fob might be a little noisy banging around anyway. We'll see what pans out over the next meeting or two.

Instead of skulls or beads what about a Titanium 'B' for Beckerheads? The lanyard can thread through the top of it just as they do everything else.

Here's a basic sinnet over paracord on BK2 and a double walker knot to make a pinkie lanyard on BK11

There are some things you can buy like Paracord Ends that perform two functions, one is they close off the end of the cord and two (like this one in the pic) is a Glow In The Dark button.

Or if you are just wanting to tie some ends don't be afraid to give it a go on your own, my 10yo Daughter made these;

A very simple book for children to learn to do this is one called "Knot Again" that can be purchased off Amazon for less than 8 dollars normally. It shows different knots and instructions on how to tie them.

Good luck.

I tie paracord as well, for money of course. Honestly, my Beckers see only loops for lanyards. I don't keep them on the knife, but I always have a hank for a lanyard somewhere, either in a pocket, or in a kit. Since I broke my hand, fatigue sets in fast when I'm chopping. I used to be able to do it for longer periods of time, but since most of the bones in my right hand have been rearranged, even just 30 mins of chopping leaves my fingers numb and my hand aching for days. A lanyard is a must now, not just a luxury.

Good looking knots though. Guys post up some more pics of your work, there maybe something in it for you, I haven't had a contest in a couple of weeks.

I'm not a big fan of fobs on large knives(ie anything carried in a sheath on your belt), I don't really see the point of it. I do like having a paracord loop on the back of my knives that I can slip my hand through for retention.

I did make a kind of fob/loop on the back of my remora that rides in my BK9 sheath. This was just from the leftovers of my paracord wrap and it is handy for pulling the little knife out.

I would at least try to make a paracord fob if I were you and then if it doesn't turn out right you can always buy one.

Good ideas, and great knot work too. Like moosez45 said, keep 'em coming, especially the brightly colored ones. I'll take all the ideas I can get for these boys. The glow-in-the-dark button would be a big hit.

randlalljames6, interesting idea with the .44 bullet. I have a ton of various bullets for my Ruger, so I may try that out later.

I just did this one recently for my daughter's izula

its a little ambitious, but the knot is in the Ashley Book of Knots which you can download from scribd.com
the main knot is #790 "four-lead diamond knot" p. 142 of the Ashley Book of knots

I also do my own hybrid lanyard which is half fob/half retention; let me know if you like any of the simple sinnets I used, I'll show you references/tutorials

Hey, real nice work in here. These fobs and other bits of knotwork look like a fun thing to get into. I'll be attempting a wrap on my soon-to-be-delivered necker, and when the time comes maybe I can pull off a cool retention fob like the one above.

Thanks for the good ideas, guys!
