Lanyard for Bill Moran

I have a brand new Bill Moran Drop Point that I want to start breaking in. Love the knife and want to get it out in the woods. However, I really like the idea of having a lanyard on my knife, and (of course) the Moran does not have a lanyard hole. Anyone out there have any ideas/experience with adding a lanyard to the Bill Moran model.

Someone might chime in here with a really good idea about how to affiix a lanyard to the knife without drilling a hole, but I would suggest contacting Spyderco and see if someone there might be able to tell you the best way and area on the handle to drill a hole and put in a lanyard liner.

When you figure it out and I know you will, share it with us because I bet there are others who would like to do the same to their knives. (Maybe me... :p

Think the only way would be to drill a lanyard hole. Drilling through the Kraton is probably a very bad idea, which would leave drilling from top to bottom. Know it's not full tang, so assuming the FRN is solid back there that should work as long as you drill with an "eggbeater" type hand drill or an electric running at VERY low rpm.

Thanks, guys. I have sent off an email to Spyderco and posted on their forum as well. If I get an answer, I will certainly let you all know.

You could maybe cord wrap the whole handle and make the ends into a lanyard, unless the handle is a bit too thick for that. Other than that I really don't know, unless you wanna drill a hole or make a completely new handle for it.

oh well...it was worth a shot. Here is the reply I received this morning --

"Thank you for your inquiry. Unfortunately we do not have a custom service to drill a lanyard hole. The blade tang of the Moran models goes down the handle almost all the way so drilling a hole for a lanyard might prove impossible. Also, altering it in any way voids all warranty. We do offer some other models including the Temperence which has a lanyard hole already. I apologize we don't have a better solution for you on that. We appreciate your patronage and love for the Spyderco product line! Let us know if you have any other questions.

The idea of using the Spyderhole is clever - depending on the sheath.

I am here to tell you from experience that drilling a tang once it's hardened is a real project and requires more than your average bits...

Watch the video. I don't think there would be a problem drilling a hole. About 15 seconds in.

Wow!! Now that sheds some new "light" on my dilema!! Thanks! Never would have thought about that idea in a million years!

Interesting that the Spyderco folks were not aware of how far down the tang was....

yeah, that one rep certainly wasn't aware.
I've never heard of the Moran breaking so I guess the tang is long enough.
You should be able to drill a hole no problem.
