What is the purpose of a lanyard hole in a tip down knife? What am I missing?

What is the purpose of a tip down knife? (Not including OTFs.)

Some people remove clips and just carry the knife in their pocket. A lanyard can help them pull the knife out of their pocket.

And some may require a lanyard for aiding retention during use (regardless of in-pocket orientation.)
