Lanyard Idea for the 110

I detect a consensus on this forum that drilling a lanyard hole in the butt of the 110 is impractical. I have also been advised such by my favorite modifier, STR. Meditation on this has prompted an idea. There is a part on the 110, perhaps called the spacer (?), that is sandwiched between the rear bolsters.

I mean that little silver thingy with the two holes. Couldn't this part be replaced by a similar part that had a little hump, or knob, extending outward from it, with a lanyard hole? How hard would this be to manufacture in a garage-sized shop? And how hard would it be to install without completely messing up the knife?

Additionally, it would make a nice punyo, or pommel, to konk the other guy when using the 110 as a fistload in a social application.

I'm barely a tinkerer in the area of knife mods, but does anyone have any thoughts on this?

P.S. Thanks to chickentrax for the picture of the dissected 110.

...That could definitely be done TIZWIN...The spacer would need to be remade though...It could be done with a piece of stainless of the same thickness...Cut it out using lots of micro-band saw blades ( stainless work hardens like a bi__ch ) ...use a transfer punch for hole placement and finish sand it the way ya want it...reassemble and you got yer lanyard hole or head "bonker" on a 110...LOL...:D :p

But would it have to be stainless? Weren't the original spacers brass?

...I thought you were wanting to "reconstruct" a newer knife...You could do brass...I'd make sure the alloy was right so it would be tough enough to support the spring though...Ya don't want it so soft it would cause the spring tension to weaken too quick...:D

That spring is so strong on those knives. I'd recommend ti at the least and pinned with a small wing on each side at the stress point where the spring is lifting it up, or trying to.

Everything but save/make money... :(

I was just thinking of that; I have some 1/8" 1095 steel downstairs and a 110 that needs scales...maybe when I get this CB750F1 rear brake caliper re-bleederscrewized...

Good idea.
Ya mean something like the Alpha fixed?

I wonder if you could tap a hole in the piece and screw in an Uncle Mike’s sling swivel to give you the same result. They are available with different shanks and one might fit.

Just a thought, is it possible to substitute one of the brass pin with a 'thick gauge hollow pin' of some type ?

Sure. A barrel nut or "Chicago Screw Post" would work nicely. Or you could just drill your lanyard hole in the bolsters only (not through the spacer); and make your lanyard horseshoe shaped.

Buck changed from a brass spacer to steel for a reason. Strength. That rockerbar spring is pretty stressed.

You could make up a whole new spacer with external loop, but it would be time consuming to mate and buff the resulting parts. Might be easier to use all barrel nuts instead of pins.

Lots of options. Some here have even drilled an extra hole in the spacer/bolsters for the lanyard.

Older 110's have spacers with more 'meat' in them.

Try several ideas; post your results.

I'm going to try a few variations of this idea as soon as I get some other stuff finished up. I like the idea

muskrat,
I'm looking forward to your results!

I think it would be a real plus for the 110's! (that and thumb grooves on the back of the blade as we discussed here before).

I have a question guys,I just checked the rear spacer on my 112 with a magnet,no stick. It's a newer one, made in the new factory. Is it aluminum or what.I always thought the spacers were steel.
