I am putting a lanyard on my Fallkniven S1 and was just curious as to how large it needs to be and how I properly use a lanyard. Then I came across something else that has been bugging me.

What is the point of lanyards like these:

And by lanyards "like these" I mean the braided lanyards. I mean, nobody is going to be sticking their hand through them so are they just for decoration? Emergency cordage? Am I missing something?

I use mine to draw my knife from my pocket and wrap around a finger for better grip.

For me their purpose is three-fold. Decoration for sure and to make it more easily accessible from my pocket. I just grab the lanyard and pull the knife out without having to stick my fingers in my pocket. Some knives are a little more troublesome than others. Also, on knives with shorter handles (I have large hands) it gives me something more to grab onto with a full fisted grip. Kind of like a handle extension.

Those are actually fobs. The terms "fob" and "lanyard" get used interchangably here, but they are not really the same thing. A fob will give you something to hang on to, a lanyard is used to attach a piece of gear to your person.

The lanyards you have pictured are nice looking for sure.I find that on a short knife it seems to make the knife feel bigger and gives you a better or at least different grip.

Someone on Wilderness & Survival Skills recently put up good pictures of how to use a lanyard. I think I can describe it in words, though.

Tie a loop of cord through the thong hole. Hang the knife off your upraised thumb by this loop, with the cord lying across the back of your hand. Turn your hand palm down and reach around to grab the knife by the handle.

The lanyard loop now holds your hand tight to the handle. Adjust the loop's size to fit comfortably. You may want to leave extra length of cord to enlarge the loop if you're wearing gloves.

If you need to reach for something, just release the knife, which will still hang off your thumb, away from what you reach for since the cord is across the back of your hand again.

Edit: Here's an old thread Purpose Of Lanyard ? http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=396823
The fourth post has an excellent series of pictures illustrating what I wrote about.

One more purpose of a fob type lanyard is that the fob can be uncoiled and converted into a standard lanyard whenever the need arises, but stays out of the way in the mean time. A knot that is relatively easy and quick to convert between the two kinds of lanyards is the one used on Sebenzas called the Reeve Coil knot (hangman's knot). There are diagrams for it on the Reeve website and here:

Thanks for the info, gonna get right on it.
My Paragon ATKO4 must have one! button:D

A bright orange or red lanyard also helps you spot your knife when they try to sneak off in the woods, grass, etc.

Squeezymo, stormdraneslanyard.blogspot.com/ would be a good place to visit

It has all kinds of lanyards and fobs and monkey fists, what this guy can make
out of 550 cord is amazing

Squeezymo,

My guess is the short ones on the small Spydy's are
just to pull them out of a change pocket on jeans..

Everyone has different preferences, some like a lot of
bling, some like practical wrist wraps etc.
