Lanyard material & size for Delica's hole?

Hi.

I'd like to put a short lanyard or fob on my Delica. I have had a hard time finding any lanyard material.

If someone can give me some ideas of which chain stores that carry suitable lanyard material, I'd appreciate it.

Odds are I'll have to order via internet.

What SIZE cord is best? The hole is pretty small.

Which cord is best? I don't care for knots working loose constantly.

I don't know what I don't know. So any advice is helpful. I've seen the "Show us your Lanyards" post" and like what is shown. Short braided lanyards or fobs. Maybe a small bead?

Thanks!

There are a lot of knife lanyard videos on YouTube showing you how to make them, what materials to use, and giving you ideas about design and style.

The most common material seems to be 550 paracord with the center core removed. (The 'wilderness & survival' folks like to keep that core in for use as fishing line.) Personally, I like to use flat leather lace braided into either a round or square lanyard. Another poster here who makes some beautiful pocket sheaths for his folders uses round lace with only a bead and a few knots in it for his lanyards.

In any case, check out YouTube for instructions and ideas, or E-Bay to purchase already made lanyards. They are easy enough to make, taking only 10 minutes to an hour to make, and making them yourself gives you the control to make it exactly the way you want it, and have it become 'yours.' :)

There`s a member on the wilderness survival board who has a blog all about the different lanyards and stuff he makes as a hobby. Do a google search for "Stormdrane" and you`ll find his blog and some vids. He`s give you some good ideas.

Good old 550 paracord is probably the best iv used.

You can tie it in to a heap of different knots for "grab" lanyards or just use a loop of cord for "retainer" lanyards.

It also comes in LOTS of colours

Here are some simple ones done with 550

You can get 550 cord at loads of places from fle-bay to your local knife/gun shops.

I use gutted 550 cord for my lanyards. I normally use a box stitch for my lanyards. There's a really nice step-by-step picture tutorial at www.boondoggleman.com

Here's what gutted orange 550 cord and a pink shoelace look like box stitched in my Delica's lanyard hole...

Getting gutted 550 cord through the lanyard hole is easy. Tie about 4" of the white cord that was inside the 550 cord around the middle of the 550 cord itself. Thread both ends of the white cord through the lanyard hole, and continue to pull. Using needle-nosed pliers is easier and allows you to roll the white cord around the pliers instead of just pulling. This should bring the thicker 550 cord through the hole.

Check out http://www.para-cord.com/, part of Wilson Tactical. They will custom make lanyards for you out of gutted 550 cord, with an extensive assortment of colors, weave patterns and various skull beads. I ordered a OD green one with a skull bead for my ZDP Delica.

I'm thinking 550 para cord is what I'd call regular ol' parachute cord, right?

I'd of never guessed it could go thru that little hole.

Thanks.

Remember, we're talking about gutted 550 cord. It's just the black sheathing that goes around the core and will fit into holes that full 550 cord won't fit into.

Full 550 cord will fit through just about all but the smallest lanyard holes. Its just a really tight fit when doubled up. Some times it wont fit doubled up though so you just have to tie the lanyard onto the knife rather than loop it on.

I usually never remove the guts on the cord unless its a box stitch like JN posted or something similar.

Nice rope work! What is that stitch you have on the left side of the photo next to the 'monkey's fist?' How is it tied? At first I though it was just a standard whipping knot but then I noticed the two colors..... Nice!

Thanks for the quick reply. I found a good video on YouTube for it, tied one up, and have added it to my repertoire. Beautiful knot. Thanks for turning me on to it!
