Lanyard on a SAK

Do you like 'em or not? And what is the practical purpose of a lanyard? I'm not talking about the "coolness" factor, or if you just like the looks of them, but what benefit do they bring to you when attached to say a Farmer or Pioneer? Do you hold them along with the handle to give you a fatter or more secure grip when in use, or do they just get in the way? Do they make it that much easier to fish the knife out of your pocket, or is it just more "stuff" to stuff in your pocket? Sorry if this sounds like a silly question, or if the answer should be obvious, but I've never had a lanyard and I'm just curious!

What say you on lanyards: Yea or Nay?

Well I put a carabiner on the other end and that's usually attached to a belt loop on my pants. Makes it easier to fish out of the pocket and harder to lose

they get in the way when you are using the tools on that side of the SAK and when you are using the screw drivers they massively get in the way.

i only put lanyards on my folders that do not have a pocket clip. i carry my SAK in my pocket so the lanyard helps to facilitate taking it out of my pocket. and it also makes it "my" knife.

I always have a lanyard on my sak. I make the lanyard just long enough that when the knot at the end is stuck under my belt, the knife hangs just above the bottom of the pocket. To attach the lanyard to the knife, I just loop the lanyard through the ring on the knife and through itself, so it makes for a very easy detachment if I want it off. That way it does not get in the way if i am using tools on that end of the sak. Thats the way we always did it with the TL-29's and MLK "demo" knives in the army.

I find the lanyard is a quick easy way to get my knife out, instead of rooting around in the bottom of my pocket. Plus, if I'm on a boat, which is common from April through early November, it can keep the knife from going to Davy Jones's locker.

I typically tie a "hangmans noose" style knot on my lanyards. And with my folders, or a SAK, I run the loop around my pinkie finger during use to prevent dropping it. This is primarily because I am notoriously clumsy. :o

I have a lanyard on my SAK that is my backup for my EDC bag and ruck. It's gets cold here in Flagstaff and reaching into a small pocket with gloves or cold hands can be tuff. The lanyard makes getting to it quick and easy.

As others have mentioned, a SAK lanyard provides two benefits:
1. It makes it easier to access from a pocket - I especially like a lanyard that ends with a monkey fist knot so that I can suspend the knife in my pocket by tucking the knot end under my belt - makes the knife feel weightless, keeps it from sinking to the bottom of my pocket, and allows me to easily access other items in that pocket such as spare change, keys, etc.
2. It provides an extra safeguard from dropping or losing your knife - especially if there's enough of a loop to slip on your little finger - with it looped around a finger, you can even let go of the knife to make a quick grab or to climb something, then flip the knife back into your hand when you're ready.
By the way, I use a lanyard on both my SAKs and my EDC fixed-blade knives (3"-3 1/2" blades) for these same two reasons.
Cheers!

I have a small one on my Farmer, and a fairly large one on my new edition locking liner Soldier. Any slipjoints with bails, it's getting a lanyard.

I use almost the same system when I go hiking or camping. On one end the lanyard is attached to the belt or a belt loop on my pants. At the other end I have put a very small carabiner on which the SAK is attached. The lanyard makes it harder to lose the SAK and the carabiner makes it very easy to attach and detach the SAK.

I say Nay.

The only time I have used one is on a small knife like a Victorinox Classic, which makes it easier to find in my pocket. Generally, though, I just think lanyards get in the way. I could see using one to prevent a person from dropping or otherwise losing a knive or multitool, but thats not me. JMO.
