Lanyard on smaller fixed blades

I have recently gotten into making simple lanyards. A little paracord, some square knots, and I have a good, cheap lanyard for my folders. I have usually put a simple loop of paracord on my choppers. I tried putting square knot lanyards on my bushcrafter blades. Carrying them, the knot lanyard works fine. Using them, it of course gets in the way. So, I just removed them, simple solution. Do you have square knot or other type of lanyards on your user fixed blades? Do they hinder you? If I have a square knot lanyard, I just make it long enough that I can get a good grip on that, sort of like the lanyard loop.

On small knives that do not allow a full grip I usually add a lanyard. This give my fingers something to grip. I like a hangman's knot (hand filling) or a simple string of knots.

One issue that I find on some knives with a deep pouch sheath is that it can be difficult to pull the knife out when there is only 1/4" of handle sticking out of the sheath. The lanyard helps there. On a smaller knife, a full loop lanyard can get in the way, particularly if the loop hangs as low as the sheath itself. In this case, I like the lanyard to be a simple, but small loop. The kind of thing that you hook a finger in to pull the blade out part way from the sheath and then grab the handle. If you make the loop right, you can also stick your pinky finger in the loop to aid grip.

I use a simple loop on my BRKT Lil' Creek to put my pinky thru.. I like a little finger loop on all my knives so I can just simple drop it and use both hands and not re-sheath it just to pull it back out again after adjusting or working w/ whatever material I'm cutting.

On my smaller knives I usually tie a simple snake knot or cobra stitch to help me retain the knife.

On larger knives, I make a simple lanyard out of straight or braided 550 cord. On my Stubby Razel, I added about three inches of braided 550 to help my hand find it. The cord hangs from my pocket just enough.

I've been using a simpler version of what orrey45 posted a picture of...something I'll dub as the "pinky retention lanyard". Works great for me and I've don't care for long, dangly lanyards on any of my knives; however, a small knotted pieced of 550 cord that is big enough for my pinky actually works well for all my "bushcraft" holds minus the ice-pick hold.

Not the best picture as my pinky-lanyard is kind of off to the side, but you can see it's not too long, but gives me a good retaining method with just my pinky without getting in the way...

I've never really understood the use of a lanyard. I've got one on my SAC so I can hang it on the coat hook near my front door and one on my axe to hang in the garage. I've tried lanyards on many different knives and couldn't get the hang of it.

I've gone so far as to get knives without lanyard holes now since I don't use them.

It just may be me, but they always, seem to get in my way, when using the knife.
