Ok, I didn't want to hijack another thread, so:
It's my understanding that a lanyard can wrap around your wrist, while a fob is mostly decorative, and unable to wrap around your wrist.
in that vein, CRKs cenerally come witha a fob, correct? and I don't know any company that puts a lanyard on a knife, although I beleve that they are required in any abs cutting competition, right?
thanks for the replies.

yep thats right, most lanyards i have seen are on fixed blades, fobs on folders, usually anyway.

i think lanyards are required for safety at cutting contests with fixed blade bowies/etc.

ya could always undo a fob and make a lanyard right quick, if required.

some fixed blades come with lanyards, esp if they have cord wrapped handles.

I'd ammend that a touch to say they have a different use (whilst admitting that most are just decorative.
The reason for folders having fobs (at least in my case) is to make retrival of them from pockets or pouches easier.

I like a little fob for helping to pull my knife out of my pocket.

If it's got a loop to go around your wrist, it's a lanyard. If it's just a knot, it's a fob. I have fobs on several knives, and I'm always on the hunt for a new knots.

I think a lot of the fobs that are tied with the "hangmans noose" i.e. Sebenza, are done that way to add enough cord so that the fob can be used as a laynard if needed.
