lanyard pin removal?

Hello Guys. I have a small Sebenza coming next week and I would like to remove the lanyard pin. I think it's the fixed pin so it won't fall out. Do I have to take the scales off to do this? I really don't want to do that if I can help it. I seem to have an aptitude for ineptitude and something always go wrong.:( Thanks for any advise.

Yes, the knife needs to come apart. Watch some YouTube videos and give it a try. I promise it's really hard to screw up. Just take your time and enjoy the craftsmanship that goes into the knife.

You need to take the scales off. And you're lucky because the Sebenza is really easy to take apart and put back together. There are plenty of videos and here is the guide from CRK website: http://chrisreeve.com/Sebenza-Assembly

You should get to know the inside and out of your knife anyways. You should do routine maintenance and lubrication.

Take it slow, and follow the directions. Watching videos will help, but some will assemble in slightly different ways. I always assemble mine exactly how is directed on his website.

Thanks calypso. I was afraid of that. I am just concerned that I'll get together and the blade will be off center or something. How about tightening the pivot screw? Is that tricky? Thanks again. Rp

It can't be off centered. That's the beauty of the Sebenza 21 design. You tighten all the screws down and the blade will always be centered. It uses a bushing pivot system, not a typical one where you need to adjust it. Crank it down, and it will be perfect.

Thanks Peter. I'll probably try that for a while and see how I like it. I definitely don't want a lanyard on a small Sebby.

I was afraid too. I just bought the large sebenza 21. I ended up taking it apart for the lanyard too. But I'll say this, you either have to untie it or cut it to keep the pin. So, if you want to keep the pin in there, which I did for aesthetics, then just untie or cut it without taking it apart. Lol I took it apart and then realized that. I also had to do the melted paracord trick but I'm pretty sure that the small is fixed, but I could be wrong. Good luck with whatever you do. When I took it apart and put it back together the blade wasn't centered, but I didn't do it like described on the CRK website. It was rubbing bad. Took some deep breathes, reread the directions and it came out perfectly. It truly is idiot proof. All screws, including the pivot screw are all fully tightened. Hope it helps your decision.

Thanks cakes. Yea I believe the small has the fixed pin. I wonder if you could just cut the pin in half with a dremel, and remove it that way? Thanks guys for the help.

I'm sure you could probably cut it in half but that would be a terrible decision. Not only could you possibly damage the scales (slipping and scratching them), but I could take apart multiple Sebenzas and take out their lanyard pins in the time it would take to cut it. Yes, it's that easy to disassemble and reassemble a Sebenza.

I wouldn't do that. Sooner or latter you will disassemble the knife for cleaning and lube. It really is pretty easy to do. I just follow the written directions as stated in the stickie and have never had any problem. If you ever decide to sell the knife, having the pin and untied cord is a plus.

By the way-It is not actually fixed. It is held in place by the 2 scales, but does rotate. If you try to cut it it's going to spin unless held somehow.

The Sebenza 21 is the easiest knife I own to fully disassemble and reassemble. Please keep the dremel away from it.

Alright guys. I'll just take the lanyard off and leave the pin. I can sense the terror in some of your posts at the mention of the word 'Dremel'.:) I'll watch the take down vid's a few times until I feel comfortable with the procedure. If it ain't broke I can fix it. Thanks.....

Hey! Put the dremel down and back away from the knife!

Only issue with leaving the lanyard pin in without a lanyard is that mine would rattle without the lanyard attached so I removed everything.

I'm running my CRKs, no lanyard, no pin. For the first couple days that extra hole for the lanyard pin in the 21 (in addition to the already extra hole) will catch your eye, then it just becomes normal, and there is no rattling on the small, and no melted paracord on the large. A good thing about the 25 is that it looks the same with no lanyard.

For the record, I don't miss having the lanyard as far as EDC-ing the knives, though it took me a while to come to that choice. No lanyard makes it easier to clean the knives in the sink (no soggy lanyard knot), and they are more discreet in your pocket without a knot hanging out. Just my preference.
