Lanyard Pin with 550 Paracord

Figured I'd post this since I know people ask and I myself have looked on the forums a few times to see if it is possible to run ungutted 550 paracord through the lanyard pin...and it is!

A pain in the butt, but possible to do with ungutted 550 paracord. I assume the small lanyard pins have the same size hole, so theoretically this should be doable on both - only tried it on a large pin (had one lying around) with 550 paracord from Supply Captain (just saying so you know its decent 7 strand 550, not some slimmer, less stranded off brand).

Anyhow, some pics - as you can see the lanyard knots are fairly thick because the paracord is ungutted. Its a bit short since I started off with a short spare piece of paracord (one I didn't mind experimenting with) and then proceeded to cut it up more to get the darn thing to fit in the lanyard pin.

Sorry for the somewhat fuzzy pics, its a bit late and i was doing it one handed - trying to reduce the lamp light with the other hand.

Yup, totally doable and not that much of a huge pain. Trick is to slice or cut one end of the paracord at a very sharp angle, heat it to melt it a little, then quickly mold it to a sharp narrow point with your fingers. This will let you start it through the small hole of the pin. Once it is sticking out the other side of the hole, grap the tip with something like needle nose pliers or Kelly clamps and pull it through the hole. Here are two done with the ungutted 550:

Thats exactly what I did! Maybe the first one is a pain since it took a few tries to get the angle right (started off pretty conservatively with the cutting angles), but hopefully if I do more in the future it'll be easier. Not sure why I couldn't find any pictures of this before though.

Those are beautiful! I hope those both get edc time! (:

HAZE had the best advise I've seen, from another thread:

You just need to remove an inch or so of the core strands and melt the outer part into a point after you pull it back over, you can pull the rest of the cord through easily if you do that and it keeps the cord firm. It is too baggy and doesn't tie well if you remove any of the inner strands, IMO. It is worth making sure the lanyard pin has no burr or sharp edges too. :)
