Lanyard Replacement

Being very new to Chris Reeve knives, is it an easy thing to replace the lanyard? I don't want to take the thing apart and have parts flying everywhere. So basically can a guy who does not want to take a knife apart to work on it easily change the lanyard out and put it back together without buggering it up?

It is easy if you use a small cord similar to what comes with it, especially if you melt the end to a small point. I usually use 550 paracord and have been able to feed it through, but it is difficult. A trick I think came from CRK is to remove two or three of the threads in the paracord then melt to a point. I did that once and it went in easily and still looked good.

I am talking about a replacement CRK lanyard with the stud and all. I am just worried that if I take the knife apart parts will go flying (like on a fishing reel...ask me how I know). So it is juat a matter of taking off the side and sticking the lanyard pin in there. But will everything stay where it is supposed to stay?

If you untie the cord the pin on the large will come out, on the small it remains in and may rattle a bit(may or may not bother you). The best way is to take the knife apart, then you have the pin and lanyard intact if you decide to add it latter. Taking apart a Sebenza is very easy and you are going to have to jump in the water sometime-now is as good a time as any(stickie at top of main pg or google for instructions). If you want to keep the pin in there are methods to do this.
This of course is assuming you have the newer lanyard and pin setup vs old style lanyard tied to the scale hole.

Peter,

Yeah I have the newer lanyard attached to the pin. I just wanted to make sure everything stays where it is supposed to be when I take it apart. LoL

BTW, parts will not come flying out. No springs or anything like that. There are some good videos on youtube I watched before I took my 1st Sebenza apart. Was a good learning experience and not hard. Watch a couple videos....

Watch some videos online. You will find Chris Reeve Knives are designed for you to take them apart and put them back together. No springs or anything like t hat to worry about. If you dont feel confident, send it in to Chris Reeve, I'm sure someone there will do it for you. Give it a spa treatment too if your knife needs it.

If you don't want to take the knife down, you can remove the lanyard cord while the pin stays in place and re tie a new one. There are several video's that show how to tie a CRK lanyard as well as the CRK web page. Or. you can remove the pin on a large and tie to the frame.

Re-read and understand. There are not many parts to a Sebenza you can see most of them, hidden is the pivot bushing and a small and large washer. Just keep track of the parts and where they go, and don't let those screws roll away. I completely assemble the handle then insert the blade, bushing and washers rather than build it like a sandwich.
Good luck

I'm not the most mechanically minded or "handy" but I have no problem taking a Sebbie apart and putting it back together. It's just a matter of unscrewing three screws and pushing the blade pin out. CRK designed them to be taken apart and cleaned. Follow the instructions in the sticky and you'll be fine. it shows that when reassembling you put the scales back together and screw them down before sliding the blade with bushing and washers back in place. Good luck and let us know how it goes.
