Lanyard ties and such

This question may be better suited in a different section but I am going to try here first and see what happens. What type of cord is best used for a lanyard for a knife. Are their tutorials on how to tie the varies knots, I have not checked youtube so I am guessing this is just a uniformed question, but regardless any suggestions would work and best ties to learn. I like the "chriss reeve knot" as I call it, and the non weighted monkey fist, although any style suggestions as well will work.
