I have seen several really nice "braided" looking 550 lanyards on knives , but am evidentally too dim to figure it out on my own. it seems to be a compact and very effective way to add some cord to my knife kit. Any ideas would be great!

I am no expert on knots and rope , but after following a few lessons on various pages , I was able to make what they did. Patience is the key :)

If you go to Chris Reeves Knives home page, you'll find simple instructions for his coil knot, which can be made to any length practical. It is indeed a great way to carry some extra cordage. I have one on my Kiwi, actually of leather boot lace on a small split ring, and the knot (similiar to a hangman's knot) also makes it easier to find the knife in my pocket, which is often crowded with other things.

I've tried braiding and I'm never satisfied with the results. I use the coil/hangmans knot. Much easier to do and the material can remain as one piece.

Phil, thanks for the excellent pictorial. Looks easy enough that even I can eventually figure it out. :D

I'm guessing my old shoelace on my crap UC fixed blade machete isn't good enough huh? Seriously, where can I get some good para cord for my fixed blade camp users?
