hey everyone. i think that this is the right place to ask this so here it goes.

i just bought some nice little strips of leather in order to make a couple of lanyards for my knives. thing is, im not sure how to make the lanyard. could someone please enlighten me as to how to do this?

thanks!

It depends on whether you want an actual lanyard or a fob, how long your leather pieces are, and how skilled you are. Tying can be a time-consuming hobby all by itself. I know I have seen links to various web pages for instructions on here, but I can't find them now.

However, I can give you a link to a rather lengthy thread on the subject over on the Spyderco forum.;)

thanks yablanowitz. i'll check out the spydie thread.

btw, the strips are about a foot and a half each in length.

thanks guys. that has helped alot. especially the chris reeve links. i just got done making my first successful lanyard! i will post pics later :D

There are nicer weaves out there, but I use a hangman's noose on all my knives....sometimes called the "Reeves Coil Knot"

That's my preferred fob as well. Part of the point of having a fob on my knife (for me at least) is so that I'll have a bit of cordage handy. With a lot of the fancier, nicer looking fobs, it can take a good bit of time to untie the knots before you can actually use the cord. With the noose it's pretty easy and quick to untie and have your cord ready to make a quick lanyard or tether for the knife, or to fashion a splint or (heaven forbid) a tourniquet, or tie down your trunk or lash something to your pack, or. . . Well you get the idea. There are tons of potential uses for a foot and a half or so of cord always kept as handy as your knife.

There is a name for every knot you can possibly conceive already. I seriously doubt anyone selling a branded knot is actually coming up with a unique new knot.
