I like them on some smaller knives. Makes it easier to pull from well fitted sheath and allows you to hold the knife farther back. The one pictured below is not made for wrist wrap, just braided leather with bead.

They're little pieces of flair for your knife!

An extension of the handle.
It helps to pull a folder out of it's belt-sheath.

Don't own one & never will !* My folders stay in my Pocket just fine and have never lost one & my Belt Sheaths are all
Custom Handmade to fit the Knife & 99% of them have Snaps to keep the Knife stationary in the Sheath.!^^
I like the big bird & Gator for my Sheaths as they look new for years & years.! Everybody to there own ~ I always say.**
Different strokes for different folks is what makes the world go around & keeps us from getting bored....!

I have the clips on my Adamas and Contego super tight. Actually pinched them down with pliers to make them stay on super tight on pocket. So tight it's kinda hard to pull them of the pants pocket. But with a lanyard just give it a pull and the knife comes off fast and smooth. Never thought i'd like them and thought they were just a stupid fashion accessory or something but if you have your clips super tight on your knives to the point where it's hard to get off pants pocket comes in very handy.

Some of us don't like snaps on fixed blade sheaths. Here's my knife and sheath from Tom Mayo. No problem with the knife staying stationary in the sheath. No snaps, thank you.

I would guess that, as a platoon sergeant, bringing up the rear of a patrol, I probably picked up a good 25-30 knives in my 20-year career. What did they all have in common? No lanyard/tiedown. It wasn't so much a problem with my own men but, in a school environment it was like going to the PX. I always equipped my knives with a 4" loop of 550 cord that I would snap into one of my pistol belt keepers. Easy to retrieve, hard to lose.

I like lanyards. Having grown up in snow country, it really sucks dropping a knife in several feet of snow to have it disappear till spring. Same thing applies around deep water. Yes for some they are simply flair but when I consider spending my money, I want the option of a lanyard.

I don't use em and generally got no use for em. Bill sums up where they'd be practical, though.

I think what the OP is calling a lanyard is actually a fob. I had on on a Leatherman Juice S2 for quite a while. It was a coil knot that ended in a monkey's fist. The monkey's fist hung out of the pocket so the tool could be readily pulled from the pocket. The fob tended to get int he way when using some of the tools so it is gone now.

A fob is for easy removal of a watch or like item from a pocket.

As Rangerbob describes it he uses a lanyard. A lanyard is used to hang an item around the neck or other wise secure gear from loss.

Never really used it as a lanyard except on a knife I take fishing, in case I drop it, it doesn't become lost in the drink. Otherwise, I see it as some others, a fob. Nifty place to keep a small amount of cord and hang my nifty decorative beads.

I know what the difference between a lanyard and a fob is...I was taking a poll as a knifemaker wondering what the public thought about lanyards on folding knives. Very simple.

Thank you for your input though, I really do appreciate it.

I like lanyards on folders that may have a deep carry clip. The lanyard helps extract the knife from my pocket. I also like lanyards on folders that are small enough that the lanyard gives my hand a little more purchase on the knife.

I quess from the post I read above. I like "FOBS" on the above mentioned folders.

I use lanyards on almost of my higher end flashlights due to losing one at the state fair but don't use a lanyard on my knives. If I drop a knife I let it drop unimpeded by my hands or legs or feet. Learned that working in a machine shop. Nothing is worth getting cut grabbing a falling edged tool.
