Lanyards on an EDC

So I carry a Mini Grip around almost everywhere. It is my goto knife. I have a lanyard on it that is about an inch long. I use it to pull it out if I can't grip the whole handle. Does anybody else EDC a knife with a lanyard?

Nope, most knives I have are easily accessible from the pocket. Some of my traditionals that have bails get put on carabiners and go into the back pocket though.

Only on knives with a low carry clip that aren't accessible enough without a lanyard. Or on short handles for extra grip.

Only one knife I own had a lanyard, my Kershaw Shallot with a deep carry clip. I use the knife for a dedicated SD blade (it's waved) and I can grab the lanyard and pull and the wave will catch and deploy the blade 100%. Works awesome! I have some other knives I use for the same purpose but they either don't ride as low or I just don't care to use a lanyard on them for whatever other reason.

I tried lanyards on my main-use EDC but my biggest complaint was getting them wet, either during use or when washing them or god forbid getting something like oil on them, then your precious lanyard is nothing more than a paint brush slinging oil all over everything.

Never. I see no reason for a lanyard on an EDC blade that rides satisfactorily in the pocket. If my EDC required a lanyard to retrieve it. I would remove the clip and just carry it in my pocket the old fashioned way. A lot easier, and much more discreet.. You aren't slashing or chopping stuff all day, are you? Even then, I wouldn't use a lanyard. Hate the things personally, but that's just me. Your mileage may vary.

I don't use a lanyard for any of my knives. IMO they are just something to either (1)flap around inside my pocket (in which case I think that defeats idea of using to assist with draws), or (2) flap around outside my pocket, which I think both looks dumb and draws unnecessary attention the fact that I am carrying a knife.

Tried a lanyard on my edc once; it got caught on my jacket, pulled the knife out of my pocket and it ended up on the sidewalk. Took it off immediately, along with the lanyards on my Sebenzas.

I don't use lanyards on knives I carry in my pocket, they just get caught on stuff. The only exception is the XL Talwar, a small lanyard helps to get a consistent wave deployment.

Knives without clips are another matter, I have lanyards on some of those since they help fish them out of my pocket and sometimes supplement very short handles (they also make it easier to attach the knife to a carabiner or something like that when doing something that could cause it to fall out of my pocket).

I find lanyards to be a giant PITA on pocket knives. They snag, get wet, get in the way, and have no redeeming qualities except in one very particular set of circumstances; water. Since I spend a great deal of time on small boats from spring through late fall, I'll use a lanyard on the SAK that I carry when out on the water, be it the Chesapeake Bay or Potomac river. That's it. Rest of the time, no lanyards for me.

I pretty much won't get a folder unless I can put a lanyard on it. It also needs a removable clip because I don't like them. I went so far as to drill holes in my Spyderco Sage 2 because I loved the knife, the only problem was a lack of lanyard. I have tried clipped knives several times, I can't go a week without getting it caught on something. I keep my knives fully in my pocket no lanyard sticking out. The lanyard is their to grab the knife and get it oriented as I pull it from my pocket, plus it gives me a place to hang homemade beads. (Usually deer antler.) It does add a surer grip on several of my knives like the Spyderco Techno. (My current favorite folder.)

As a note I love clips for backup knives that are kept in my EDC bag...I was very happy that I kept the clip for my sage 2 when relegated it to backup duty in my EDC bag.

I was seriously considering a Chris Reeve Mnandi for awhile. The fact that attaching a lanyard was impossible was the reason I never got one. For awhile I even considered getting a lanyard attachment custom made, but you shouldn't have to alter a knife that is that expensive. Funny because before I got a Sebenza, I never used lanyards, now I don't care for knives without them. (I even contacted Chris Reeve about attaching a lanyard to a Mnandi, along with a request to bring back the Umfaan. No go on either front.)

My mileage does not. You nailed it. If I can't easily get a knife out of my pocket, the knife's design is wrong.

I think lanyards ruin the point of deep carry pocket clips. I like deep carry so I don't have to have something sticking out of my pocket! As far as giving a longer grip, I would much rather hold a knife with two fingers than have to use a lanyard. I also hate pointless holes in my knives. I would definitely pay extra money to have the manufacturer NOT drill a lanyard hole in my handles. I can not conceive of any situation that could convince me to put a lanyard on one of my knives.

Though...with no lanyards I don't have anything to put my totally radical X-treme titanium skull bead on! So that's the downside. :)

In all seriousness, bpeezer made a great point. Why have a deep carry clip and then have some other thing sticking out of you pocket?

Caleb M what you describe on your Mini Grip is a fob. A lanyard is a longer piece that can usually be looped around the wrist. I like short fobs of about an inch on some of my knives, its more decoration that anything. Anything longer than an inch or so just gets in the way IMO.

Funny this tread should come up today. Yesterday I received my first Sebenza in the mail and it came with a lanyard on it. I have never been a lanyard guy, but have been debating whether or not to take it off. I'm going to give it a try for a little but will probably end up taking it off eventually, that is unless it grows on me.
