I would like to get some ideas of what kind of lanyards you are putting on your knife bails. Something with a clip so it does not get lost. Something decorative also.
Show me some pics please

Smaller knives get a watch chain and clip.

Larger knives I like a small bone or stag bead

I lose anything that isn't tied to myself. So my Victorinox SAK (traditional enough) is attached to my belt with an old shoe lace. It's not worthy of a picture, I promise. :D

Sadly, most other traditional knives don't have bails, so they are eliminated from carry consideration.

Those short lanyards posted above, I must be missing the point. If you tie the end of that lanyard to your belt or pack, you can only move the knife about two inches.

I'm not cutting anything that close to my leg.

Loving your lanyards guys!

I like how the carabiner is disguised on the "leash" lanyard. Nice touch.

I like to tie a knot too, although I dismantled my lanyard rig to use the wood for carving, and to make (another) strop. :o

I don't have any traditional knives with lanyard holes (yet) but I do have a nice piece of very thin black leather and a lace cutter. I'll be braiding a nice one for the kit fixed blade (thanks again combatjiujitsu!) once it's done.

Question: where can I find a piece of bone to make a bead? Is it feasible to harvest a piece of cow bone from, say, a steak dinner or something? Any particular way to dry/drill it?

copied the leash idea for my bullnose

otherwise it's normally some kind of leather lanyard with a wooden bead

Fes and Sonnemann my favorite for decoration is the stag and antler beads
Pete I would love to see how that adjustable one is tied and works
KYenglish that Case looks familiar

I made this one out of one of those bracelets you git for a dollar offline. The knife is/was a 1990 anniversary edition Remington reproduction made by Camillus that was re handled for me by a great lover of traditional folders in his own right.

Lovely looking swiss style scout! Can you tell us what it is?

The short lanyard is really just an extension of the handle. It can help keep a knife upright in the pocket, it helps keep the knife from falling out of the pocket as easily (more stuff to get in the way), it helps you know that there is a knife in your pocket without checking to see if it's there with your hand, and it also acts as a handle to quickly pull the knife out of your pocket (most people have the bead hanging out of the top of their pockets for an easy 'grab' or 'pull' in order to retrieve the knife). For Shorter handled knives, a short and thick lanyard with a bead is actually useful as an extended grip for you pinky finger, and can provide more of secured grip type feeling.

Before I gave richstag my old Bullnose, I used to keep a leather lanyard with a simple knot at the end.
