I have heard some people talking about how they dont use a lanyard because it gets caught on brush and they can lose their knife. Maybe their sheath sucks? I for one have never had this happen so I continue to use lanyards on just about all my knives. I got into a discussion a while back around a campfire about lanyards and think everyone had their own ways and theories of using them.
I compiled a few pictures of some lanyard variations I use on my fixed blades, SAKs, and Choppers.
For chopping knives and machetes I prefer the same as my fixed blade knife. The lanyard is passed over the thumb and then around the backside of the hand. Less swing if it is dropped.

For smaller knives, I use a smaller lanyard that just attaches to my pinky and ring finger just in case of any accidental slipping. The bright color also makes it easy to find if and when the knife gets dropped.
Loop in the middle of the lanyard to slip a finger into
Lanyards with the TOPS Indio
Blade: 3 5/8 Flat Grind
Cutting edge: 3 3/8
Thickness: 5/32
Overall length: 7 3/8
Steel: 154 CM
Sheath: Leather
Weight: 4.8oz
Weight w/ Sheath: 6.6oz
Handle features blue and black G10 scales with red liners.
Leather Sheath
Large belt loop
The snap on the leather sheath cuts out the possibility of losing your knife due to it catching on brush.
When I first took the knife out of the box I remembered it didnt come with a lanyard hole. The scales are fastened with hex screws so all I had to do was take one out and attach my own. The other two screws kept the scales perfectly intact.
My regular lanyard position same as with the choppers.
