Alright guys, can someone tell me what's up with a lanyard on a pocket knife? I get the purpose of one on a big fixed blade... But can't figure out a use for one on a pocket knife. Is it all for looks? Is is there a legit reason? If it's looks only I totally get it (think it fits some knives nice) . Just curious on what yall think about em? Pics would be cool to

Simple...gets the knife out of my pocket or off my neck strap quickly.

Ever have it get hung up on things? By the way ... Awesome knives man .

I've been using lanyards on pocket knives with clips for years. Not so much on in-pocket carry knives like the two below. Those are more for looks.

Never have had lanyard hanging out my back pocket get hung up on anything.

I've found the biggest advantage is 1. Being able to have a two or even three finger grip on the knife as it's being pulled from the pocket without having to reach way down or put extra pressure on the clip during retrieval 2. Being able to pull out out of pocket while your squatting down or sitting where the butt of the knife is buried in the crease of your leg. Nevertheless,I really dislike the way they feel while handling or using the blade. So I stopped using them.

There's definitely an advantage to using a lanyard, but as Rdnesh69 stated before me, I don't like how they feel in hand. A lanyard makes it easier to pull a knife from the pocket, but for me they always seem to interfere with my grip on the handle.

Makes sense. I can see how it would def help getting out of pocket. But I think it would probly be a pain while using. Thanks guys

As others have said, lanyards assist in drawing the knife from the pocket. It makes a world of difference for getting my Spyderco Byrd to flip open.

They aid in the wave draw by providing a grip extension. On the particular knife in the picture, I also carry my AA sobriety chip.

I'm currently using my 1st one, knife has a really tight pocket clip, absolutely assists with removal.
I like the tight pocket clip, don't wanna loose my blade!!!

Love em' always look to see if the knife has a means to attach one, as said above, they aid in removal from your pocket.

Here's a Thread on lanyards I did a short while ago, shows how to tie the diamond knot used on them.

now I also do a whipping thread knot to prevent the lanyard from moving around into the path of the blade, like on this kool little folder

and on my neck knife, I make what I call a BobTail fob, just enough there to hook my pinky around to help draw the knife out of the sheath, but not so long it bothers you to wear it.

I put lanyards/fobs on some SAKs to help me find them in my pocket/bag. Same goes for flashlights and a few knives without pocket clips.

They can be useful on small knives to get a better grip, but if I put one on, it usually doesn't stay there long.

For my knives with pocket clips, I have no use for them, really. They just get in the way and occasionally snag on things. Once this happened with a waved folder and it opened completely as it was yanked out of my pocket. Luckily no blood was spilled!

I only have lanyards on my SAK's , because I carry them in sheaths and pouches and the lanyard makes it easier to extract the knife from a tight fitting sheath and on one design it acts as a retention device as well .
Do you recognise the orange ones Gary :)

I agree, I also have lanyards on some of my stuff. It really helps with deep carry blades like the ZT 0562 I have, as pictured above as well. I also have one on my SAK which I like.

Nice Ken, I DO remember those orange ones :)

And yes, the SAK's I feel benefit from a lanyard, I made the mistake of grinding off the slip ring connector on one and sure wish I had left it on there!

I don't put 'em on all of my folders, but for the ones I carry a lot, I do like a short lanyard. I don't use clips so the knife drops down into my pocket. A short lanyard helps me "index" the knife when I reach for it (know which end is which) and get it in the right position before it comes out of my pocket. On our garage or studio knives, I add a lanyard to hang the knives on a peg board.
