Lanyards work great for small folders

They won’t magically make bad ergonomics go away, but the firm yet flexible piece of paracord helps add positivity to the grip. Added some cord to the old man’s Dragonfly. Works like a charm.

Lanyards do work...but that isn't actually a lanyard. A lanyard would go around the wrist (or another attachment point) to prevent loss, dropping, etc.
:D

I'm not really a fan of lanyards, thongs, or fobs on knives; but I do have a thong on a small fixed blade, and I haven't taken the fob off my small WC 21. Regardless of what one calls them, I agree that those things do help to get a good hold on a small knife

Oh. Let’s call it a knife-tail thing then. :D

I have a couple of conditions for knife-tail things. They shouldn’t impede deployment in any way, not too heavy or blingy, and they shouldn’t be too long.

For the lanyard that you described, I prefer them on big blades or perhaps my recently acquired Cold Steel War Hawk, hehe. I wrap the cord around my hand rather than the wrist.

I generally dislike a lanyard or thong on a knife. The first thing I did to my CRK was remove the lanyard when I took it apart.

I find they get in the way and make a folding knife less pocket friendly. I find them potentially dangerous on a big knife should the blade get away from you (I think it is more probable that a big knife that slips and is attached to you will find a way to bite you rather than he a serious threat as a projectile, YMMV).

Now, I will say that I am kinda digging the bit of cord I put on my new Fiddleback Monarch. Fiddleback knives come wrapped and tied up with a bit of paracord. Just for fun, I put it through the lanyard hole on the handle. I wanted to try this because I planned on keeping it housed deep in my front pocket and in a form fitting sheath. Getring a purchase on the smooth G10 can be tricky. The short bit of cord is just long enough that when I put four fingers through to draw the knife, it lands across my knuckles and sort of tightens the handle in my grip. It won't make it over my wrist, which I would not like anyway. However, it does keep the knife from rolling in my hands a bit.

Dunno if I'll keep it on there, but it's not bothering too much yet.

I like them for assisting deployment on a small knife.
The bad thing about them is they draw attention to what your carrying.
The only time I have ever been asked by security about the knife I was carrying
was in a casino and it had a fob.

I have the little Giant Mouse fixed blade, it comes with a lanyard that effectively allows a full four finger grip. Without it I can only manage three, and the sheath is tight so it also assists in deployment. I'd much prefer a full size handle though.

you should actually try it out the other way so you can loop it around your wrist, it makes an ever bigger difference, it can make your grip more secure and can extend the length of your little knife a bit more

If discretion is key, you can always tuck back the tail into your pocket. I don’t like paracord sticking out when I got my knife clipped to my pocket.

Thanks guys, diamond knot to anchor your last digit and the whipping knot to keep it from flopping around so it doesn't get into the path of the blade when closing, also keeps the knot centered better while giving you room to hook your pinky around the paracord to retrieve the knife as well.

Whatever you want to call it, I have several knives to which I have tied knotted pieces of 550 paracord.
(I think I would rather misuse the word "lanyard" than continuously repeat "knotted pieces of 550 paracord", so if you will pardon me, misuse it, I will.)

I most frequently tie lanyards to small knives, but I also have one on an SAK Farmer, which isn't all that small. I always tie them for the same reason, they make the knife easier to find in the cargo pockets of my pants where I commonly carry them. Has nothing to do with holding it during use, and I have not attached lanyards to any of my knives which have pocket clips.

Please be careful with lanyards on 'hawks!!
If you let it go your wrist becomes the pivot/fulcrum, and the cutting edge will swing wildly in random directions, the more you move your hand or body the worse it gets. If you're armoured in chain or plate, the risk is reduced. I would rather walk a few paces to retreive my tool than have it bite me

Duly noted, thanks. Haven't added a lanyard to the Hawk yet. The CS war hawk is more of an axe than a tomahawk really. Really head heavy and swings with authority. I've delegated it to more of an emergency or breaching tool if needed. I can't really use it as a weapon effectively lol.

Might drop a quick review in the CS subforum.
