I'm just curious, but how many of your have lanyards on your everyday carry knife? I put one on my CQC6 because I occasionally do activities, which could hypothetically cause my knife to fall. But I found having one on my EDC knife bulky and am not really sure if I like it or not.

Also, I was curious how many actually take their Emerson’s into the water with them? I know that Emerson Knives were designed for hard use and many developed for the Navy Seals. But I was thinking, won't the micarta handles bulge and expand from emersion in water?
For those that do carry their knives into water, what do you to for maintenance of your knives? Thanks for your input.

Mac

Micarta is completely impervious to water, as is G-10.
My wife and I go swimming at the lake fairly often during the summer time, and me being me, all my swim trunks have pockets in them. In one of those pockets you'll find my Commander clipped in there.

It's been dowsed in the the lake for hours at a time, come out, gone back in, cut steaks on the grill, and gone back in the lake again.

When I get home, I dry it out with a few blasts of compressed air and put two drops of Slick-50 on the pivot.

No rust at all, pivot is just as smooth and even as when I set the tension and locktite'ed it in place.

:D

Duuuhhhhh!

To answer your PRIMARY question...

I tried a lanyard on my Commander for awhile but I found that it just got in the way of a clean draw.

Like Ken, I did use a lanyard on a Commander, but it just got in the way.

I have taken a Commander diving, worked great. :D

I put a lanyard (hangman's noose) on most of my EDCs except the Commander, as it does get in the way of a clean draw. Mostly use the lanyards as fobs and pulls rather than leashes.

Though I am wet a good bit of the time, along with the knife de jour I have never had a problem. I use WD-40 after the submersion and then, when I get a chance, wipe the blade with motor oil (ultility knives) or mineral oil (knives that touch food) and slick up the pivot/action with the trendy lube available to me at the time. Preference given to Militec or Flourinated Grease.

I have a lanyard on the SOFCK that I use a my main EDC. This is used a draw when it is not clipped to a pocket (sheeple problems...).

As to use around water I just use Tuf Glide and take the knife apart on a regular basis. No a problem.

Regards,

Ed

Putting a lanyard on your wave-equipped EKI knife of choice at least triples the speed with which the knife can be drawn from the hip pocket. All you have to do it hook the lanyard (noose type) with your pinky and ring fingers, then you sort of "catch" the knife as you deploy it. Hard to explain, but very effective. The main disadvantage of a lanyard is that it makes changing from sabre grip to reverse grip more difficult.

Try a lanyard...you'll like it ;)

Oh, regarding Emerson's and H20. Mine haven't fared that well in this department. My CQC7A (w/ homegrown wave) has a bit of rust on the blade, and my LaGriffe rusted up very impressively after I forgot to dry it off after wearing it around my neck on a hot summer's day. Of course, it doesn't affect the functionality of the knife, but it has a detrimental effect on the "cuteness" of the LaGriffe.

Thanks for filling me in on using my Emerson near water, I had always thought that the micarta would become damaged. So much for believing that old wives tale.

I have decided to pull my lanyard off my 6 but intend to keep a lanyard handy for when I do go into the surf. Also, I was thinking of buying one the Sentry's "Tuff-Cloths" but wanted to know what you all think of it. The cost isn't really that big of a deal, but I just want to get something that works well. Won't a tuff cloth stain the micarta grips? Thanks

Mac

The Tuff-Cloth doesn't 'stain' the micarta as such, but it does darken it a bit. How much it darkens it depends on how much you've carried the CQC6, as the scales do darken with time and use anyway.

I havw a lanyard on my Mach 1. It does speed up WAVE time a lot and he's right about catching it. To me, Lanyards have a much greater psychological purpose. Any sheeple seeing a knife with a cord hanging off it usulally think of them as tools. Utility vs. Weapon.

imho lanyards look great on some knives, and not so great on others - work best imho on tip down carry - my emerson CQC7 and BM 975SBT both sport lanyards, and look like they should have one on them - while my BM AFCK, and a buds Emerson Commander, dont look good - so its just up to personal preferences imho - slick 50 does work good, i have been using spray mobil 1 sprayed into a smaller gun oil bottle, w/good results - i like it better than white lightening, it doesnt 'gum up' like WL does sometimes - i also bike w/my knife all the time and swim some - when i get home sweat is totally covering my knife - i usually wash them off w/hot water, dry well, and oil the blade w/a good oil (WD40, breakfree, etc) and put mobil 1 on the pivot w/no rust probs as of yet.....

Don't leave too much loop near the handle or the lanyard can slip over the blade and prevent it from opening. I've been testing one on my trail? knife and it works ok so far.
