why do people take the lanyards off; more importantly why do they untie the lanyard then call the knife "New in Box". I certainly cannot tie the lanyard the same way they do at the shop. as far as I am concerned at that point it is not "new" or "like new"
I like the lanyards! and I just had to say it.

I usually remove them as I do not particularly care for them. However, I never untie them.. I agree with you on not being listed as New.

I agree that a CRK that had the lanyard cut or untied should no longer be marked NIB, nor should one that was disassembled by anyone other than CRK even if just to remove the lanyard pin. I do remove them from mine though simply because I don't like them hanging outside my pocked.

1. Some do not like the lanyards. I tend to keep them on my smalls and remove them from larges. Also, with time they will frequently fray from contact with the blade.

2. NIB •should• be EXACTLY as packaged from the factory. Why there is exception to this baffles me as well.

3. The lanyards are not tied by magic. There are tons of YT videos about tying snake knots and whatever the other style is called.

While this is true, there is not enough remaining length to work with to retie it with the original piece of factory cord, which I believe is the OP's criticism.

I agree once the lanyard is removed it's not exactly NIB. It's not enough to deter me from buying the knife though. I remove the lanyard they come with and usually tie my own on. The lanyards they come with stick up out of the pocket too much for me but you could argu thats the point of them.

I’m not a fan of the lanyard and cut mine off the day I got it. I do however agree it’s not NIB or ”like new” if the lanyard has been removed.

Cheers, Mac

To me its irrelevant, its a small piece of chord and its not like you can buy one.. I'll gladly cover the 15-20 bucks to replace the piece of chord if a buyer is hung up on it.

It’s not NIB if it’s been altered. Not a deal breaker at all for me, just don’t call it NIB

I carry a clipless small in pocket, so I like the lanyard. Use’em till they are worn out, then tie my own.

Speaking of lanyards I have a new large inkosi that the lanyard unraveled itself on its own I never pull a knife out by the lanyard. Called crk and asked them about they said I could try to retie it but as mentioned above there’s not enough material to properly tie it back. Said they wouldn’t warranty it because it’s a wear and tear item. I’ve only been carrying it for a week and you’re telling me that I buy a $500 knife and you can’t replace a lanyard for me? A little disappointed at this price level. Yes I know it’s only $20 for a new one but it’s the principle. And I have multiple crks. Oh well rant over.

Edit: I sent an email to the crk warranty dept less than an hour ago and the warranty manager called me back just now and they are sending me out another lanyard. This has been resolved and my faith in crk reinstated!! And yes i realize it was just a lanyard.

Amen! If I see a knife listed as “NIB” but no lanyard in the pictures it’s an instant pass from me. I do like the lanyards on my knives.

While correct it is not NIB, it is one of the lesser infractions. Many listings of NIB are not. You need to take care and ask ?'s if true NIB is a must.
Unlikely to be a deal breaker for me , as long as the rest of the knife is mint.
For my carry method the lanyard just gets in the way and serves no benefit, so they do come off. Now that they use the pin , I disassemble, but once there was no choice but to un-tie

Glad it was resolved to your satisfaction

I don't particularly care for lanyards in general, the one exception being on my small 21; it does give me a little more purchase for my pinky finger. I rarely carry the small however, it is just a bit too small - but it is sentimental so it will one day be passed on to my oldest son.

As for listing NIB, that would be somewhat questionable; but I have seen other listings that have more egregious issues.

I agree with Peter, if you pass on a knife you want because it has had the lanyard removed, or not included, you are (in my opinion) cutting off your lanyard to spite your face! Even if listed NIB , most people at least take them out to inspect them, or cut a finger!

I normally buy my CRKs (more because the 21 are no longer made) used and I had one where the lanyard was removed. It was a small 21 and it was bugging me so I retied and it took many tries to get 9 wraps like you normally see on a new CRK. I agree if lanyard is removed the knife should not be considered NIB. I was looking for nice 21s at the time and let this slide, but I now have a new appreciation for the effort it takes to retie it if you want the 9 wraps.

Never owned a Sebenza. Do they all have a lanyard installed from the factory?

The Sebenza is the only knife I’ve ever kept the lanyard installed or swapped out for another. I don’t know why but I guess that’s the way it is.

My Wilson Starbenza is the only one of mine that still has the lanyard. It doesn't bother me. All my others I took the lanyard off the first time I took them apart for cleaning & relube. Those bother me even less.

But yeah. If it doesn't have the lanyard on, no way can it be called NIB.

And this thread needs a picture.:)
