What is the purpose of a lanyard? I have seen many with a loop for the wrist which is self explanatory but what about the lanyards tied like a noose without the loop. Do those serve a purpose other then decoration?

The "tail" style lanyards help you draw the knife. They are also decorative and that ten inches length of cord could come in handy.

After using the noose style lanyard on a couple of my smaller fixed blades and one of my folders I can say that it really changes the feel of the knife for me. On the folder it was nice for the draw, but it was also a way of making the grip of the knife seem a little larger. I took it off one of my small fixed blades (Camillus Cuda Arc Lite) and the grip felt really strange. I didn't realize it made such a big difference in the way it felt untill I removed it. After that I put one on my Dozier Straight Personal when I got it and am loving it.

The "noose type lanyard" serves the same purpose. . .to secure your knife to something (wrist, belt, belt loop, piece of equipment, etc.) so that you don't lose/drop the knife as you're working with it and other tools.

The "noose" is nothing more than a means of keeping the lanyard compact. And, it's also decorative. . .to some.

Can you imagine what a pain it would be to carry a unraveled lanyard ? It would get in the way of all of the other cool things we carry. ;)
