Lanyards

What is the function of the short lanyards many put on their fixed blades? At first I thought perhaps it was for knife retention or to avoid dropping it. Yet, those lanyard/knive combos I have seen pictures of are too short to put a hand in for that purpose.

Secondly, if there is an actual functionality to it, how do you tie them with the multiple knots/wraps that are so common?

Thanks! I can't do any searches. I know how annoying it is for newbies to ask the same 'ole questions that were asked & addressed numerous times.
 
There are very few questions asked that haven't been asked numerous times before (a good example is "Whats so special about a Sebenza"). But every time a question is re-asked it hopefully helps someone who didn't see it previously. So ask away, just not about a Sebenza... :rolleyes: :p
