Lapping ceramic bench stone

I just bought an ultra-fine ceramic stone one side of which is not fully machined so that roughly half of it has a rougher finish than the rest. The other side is good.

I can send it back to the manufacturer for warranty replacement, or should I take this as an opportunity to try lapping the defective side? I already have 28/20u and 14/10u as well as finer water-soluble diamond lapping pastes that I could make a slurry with and use against a glass plate.

Spend money to send it in and get a replacement, or try lapping and end up with either a UF/UUF stone or a single-sided UF stone.

Thanks for the input.

My vote: exchange it, and why do you have to pay to exchange defective product?

(Whose ceramic, what size, and what did it cost?)

My recent experience with dressing some Shapton Glass stones, a 16k and a 30k, is that the finish on the knife didn't change whether I dressed them with 63 micron silicon carbide on a flat surface or 2.5 micron diamond stones. As long as it is close I would just dress it. Do you have any diamond plates you could use?

ekast, I would certainly lap it... This will do exactly what your wishing for, and change it's surface to finer. Which will last
for a long time. And eventually (depending on how much you use it) grind back to it's original grit. I got an ultra fine in
this manner as well. Plus, as stated by Sal Glasser this is how Spyderco does their ultra fine stone. I used a coarse and fine
diamond stone to do mine and it ruined my coarse plate. But you could buy cheap plates and still come out ahead of purchasing the ultra fine stone. Plus, another added benefit is the experience you gain. DM

I use the ultra fine side to hone my razor, then strop it. And this really works, giving a great shave. DM

It's an ultra fine Spyderco Ceramic stone, you save ALOT more money in the end just sending it back then wasting consumables on it. The bond isn't designed to break down like Shapton glass stones. Also dressing the surface too rough can change how that stone in particular behaves. Sal offered to replace it for you on the Spyderco forum, I'd take his offer.

I'd take his offer.

Yes, he kindly recommended I send it in. This was just a thought I had as an alternative, having read about others’ experiences lapping similar stones for flatness. This one is very flat, just an issue with surface finish on one side.

Thanks for the input, I will send it in as he and you have suggested.
