Lapping shapton stones

I hope this is the right place to post this. Sorry if this has been posted before, but I’m still a bit confused reading other posts.

So I finally got a better sharpening set than the spyderco sharpmaker. I ending up ordering some shapton stones, but I’m rather confused as to how lapping them works. The stones I ordered were the shapton pro from 120-30000. Not sure why I thought I would need every stone being a newbie, but it’s too late now.

Regarding lapping the stones, can I just use sandpaper on top a flat tile?

Should I get the atoma 140?

From what I could gather, I do not want to use the 140 for the finer stones. Does this mean I need to order all the atoma plates?

Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks

Forgot to mention, I saw somewhere that when using sandpaper, use half the grit of the stone. So for a 1000 grit stone, I use 500 grit sandpaper? What about the 30000?

If you've spent that much, why not get the Shapton lapping plate?

I use the Atoma 400 for all but the coarsest stones and the Atoma 140 for those.

For the finest stones, you can also just rub them together with a bit of slurry for lubrication, eg rub the 8k and 16k together.

Thanks for the reply. Would the shapton plate be better than Atoma 400 and 1200? Im guessing I would still need to get the 120 for the coarser stones.

Atoma 140 is what I use then on the finer stones that have superficial scratches from the 140 I use the Atoma 600 plate. You can also take something like the Shapton 1k stone and use to remove finer scratches on your higher grit stones.

I use an Atoma 140 for all and anything beyond 1000 grit I texture/smooth with a Nagura stone. I had the DGLP and did not like it, it was slow and would glaze my SG500.

Thank for the feedback everyone. Looks like I’ll be buying an atoma 140.

I use the Atoma 140 on my SG 220 & 500. I tried sandpaper and you can flatten them, but the suface of the stone is compromised. You really need diamond to prep the surface to cut the way the stones are supposed to.
