Laptop case for traditional knife storage?

If there is one thing that we all enjoy doing with our knives, its chicken-eyein' and coon-fingerin' to our collective hearts' content. It is convenient when you can bridge long-term and short-storage solutions into easily displaying your collection for either sharing with friends or simply looking for the right fit for the pocket on a given day.

I have shared the little racks that I found online before for storage in my home, but heres a quick example. I have like 6 of these things. These are nice because they are not too expensive or difficult to make if you have the means, and they really show off traditional folding knives well.

They have their downsides though. Bumping the table or shelves they are on can send knives tumbling, and they collect a lot of dust while being exposed to ambient humidity.

When I was more into modern folders, I picked up this Pelican case. Modern folders being so bulky, I opted for a solution that allowed for vertical storage as it was the most bang-for-the-buck case. However, when you open it you are more or less just greeted with an array of pivots. It would be much cooler to have the knives visible, but not many would fit, and most of the other dimension options dont make much sense for flat storage. Heres the case now with the few moderns I still have, as well as my non GEC traditionals.

Getting things together for my road trip to Titusville for the GEC Rendezvous had me wondering about any newer solutions that might have come to market since I last looked, and I was not disappointed. Pelican makes sealing, hard-shell laptop cases! These cases are thin, so ideal for displaying knives like a drawer when you open them. At the same time, they protect steel from the elements, and make things super portable. The modular foam lets you design your own inserts too! There are probably multiple products on the market like this, but I am pretty pleased with this one.

Very nice! I have tried a number of cases with various degrees of success, but that looks like a winner!

I was just trying to find a good way to transport some knives in a safe practical way. This looks great! I may have to find one.

You have some beautiful knives in there too! I hope to see some in person in a couple of days!

Is the foam on the bottom layer soft or stiff? How easy is it to remove the pieces for the knives?
I find it ironic that the case is named 1095! I guess it was made for our GECs:)
It is a fairly stiff foam. I did not find it too difficult to pull the pieces out. They are more or less perforated, but not completely separated. I used a think blade to score the perforations to make it easier to pull out the parts I wanted to.

Also, The thickness of the removable foam is an inch or more - resulting in deeper pockets than I wanted for my knives. As a resolution, I would remove the foam rectangle for a knife spot, then halve its thickness before putting half of it back into place. This results in shallower spaces for the knives. This is easier to explain with pics, so I will add those later.

I really like this idea!

I might pick one up. Pelican always makes me nervous with their foam, though. I might try to replace it with some closed cell.

Good call on the case though, it looks perfect.

I just picked up a Pelican 1400 but like you I didn't want to see an army of pivots when it's opened. After see this thread I put in for a return and ordered one of these. This is exactly what I've been looking for, thank you so much for posting this.
Also beautiful collection! :)

Just a word of warning. A fancy case, particularly Pelican, tells dishonest people that there is something inside worth stealing. A customer of ours has found through experience that fancy cases invite thieves, even if what's inside is so specialized it cannot be readily sold. They will risk stealing it based upon the fancy case before they even know what is inside.

Interesting note brownshoe, I had not thought of that! For me it would stay inside most of the time and I would hang onto it when taking knives out:thumbsup:
