So a few days ago a vertical line appeared on my laptop screen. It is about 2 inches in from the right side and goes all the way from the top to the bottom of the screen. it has a few breaks in the line, but for the most part it is a solid line down my screen. If i put my mouse on it it appears as if it goes over the line (not sure if this helps or not, i just figured id give as much info as possible). Does anybody know what might have caused this, and how can I fix it? I hope this does not mean my computer is going out... i have a lot of work I need to do before the end of the semester and having my laptop go out could really screw things up.

I had a laptop that had the same problem. It was annoying but otherwise, it never gave me any trouble.

Sounds like your LCD screen is going bad if it is under warranty should be a simple easy fix .

When you first boot up the computer...can you see the line before Windows actually starts? If so, a whole column of pixels crapped out. The only fix would be LCD replacement. If the line only presets itself after windows loads, it's likely a driver issue and can be fixed be installing the latest driver for you specific video card.

Another quick test is to hook up an external monitor...if you see the same line....it's probably the driver.

Right. And if you don't see the line it's the screen--same problem I have on my laptop.

95% not worth fixing if it's not under warranty.

Real quick question. Who made your laptop? I'm a Dell tech here in Seattle and Dells and Hp/Compaq's both have the same problem. From opening and closing the ribbon cable for data comes loose. When this happens a line can appear because that particular filament isn't getting a signal. If you are capable enough to take the LCD case apart check the cable by reseating it then tape it in place again. The newer one latch together but can still come loose.

I hope this helps.

As a note though, that filament may be bad too. I'm just suggesting to check the cheap stuff 1st before replacing the LCD. If it is a Dell, let me know what model and service tag # and I'll see if I have one in stock.

Graphics. Probably graphics card drivers.
I doubt it's a driver / software problem. Could be a problem with the graphic card (on a laptop, that'll be part of the motherboard).

But, especially after VooVoo's post, it really sounds like a defect in the screen itself.

Agree with SharpByCoop, if it's not under warranty it's probably not worth fixing. The problem is that laptops don't contain standardized interchangeable parts like a desktop - that screen is perhaps made for that one single laptop model. To order a new screen, you'll have to do so from the laptop manufacturer, and they'll charge a fortune.

If you can't get it fixed for free/cheap, just keep using the laptop until it croaks the rest of the way. Could work for years with that annoying line...

Good Luck,

Well so far it hasn't died on me yet. Another line showed up about a week ago. So now I have one about 2 inches in from the left side of the screen, and another one about 3.5 inches to the left of the original one. I'm hoping it will get me through my papers I have to write for my finals (I'm all done this Thursday). The computer is no longer under warranty so I guess ill have to start looking for a new one. Keep your fingers crossed that it doesn't crap out on me

Does your laptop have a port to plug in an external monitor? Many do. That'll help a lot if the screen fails completely before you print out the last paper.

If it doesn't you'd better make frequent backups, burning cds or mailing to a gmail account or copying to a thumb drive, whatever you can do to save your work....
