Large and small? Which is better and why?

I bought the Large Classic first and am now getting a small wood Damascus as well as a Mnandi.

I figured the Large was better 'value' as you get a lot more knife for the money, but after thinking about it I went for the 'small' as I find a 3" knife is more EDC than the full sized model. I also wanted a carry anywhere knife, so the Mnandi is perfect also.

I think I was wrong to judge the Large in terms of value as many people seem to get the Large for the same reason and eventually get a Small as well as it is more practical?

What do the rest of you think? Which is better for EDC or medium use? I am not talking about heavy camping trips as a primary knife but the urban sprawl!

Also does the small feel really small? The nearest I have in size is a Camillus 154CM EDC and a Delica. Cheers all!

I have both large and small sebenzas, if you carry the large for a while the small may seem small until you get used to it. But when I carry the small, I can't ever say I missed carrying the big one because the small does so well.

The small is lighter and easier to carry IMO.
I don't think it is a matter of size and price determining value. They're both great values.
Just get the one that fits your needs/wants.

I like the small also because of it's ease of carry. I'm going to get a damascus blade on my redwood burl too. CRK says the wait is a year and told them to sign me up. The cost is $150 and they will contact me when they are ready too do it. They fit the knife blade to the knife so I will have to send it in. They will also send the original blade back so that I can change them around if I want. How long until you get your wood inlay? You got the walnut inlay right? I think you be very happy with the inlay. It fills out the handle and is beatiful. My vote is small all the way!

I try not to equate size to price because it drives me crazy trying to figure it out.

I think in many (not all) high end knives you are paying for the time that goes into making them more so than the materials.

For the large and small Sebenza, I'm sure they take close to the same amount of time to make, and the materials probably cost CRK about $30. What you're paying for is the labor.

That's why IMO you should buy the knife that suits you best. Right now I have one Large and 3 Small variants of the Sebenza, I just carry the smalls more often because of my daily lifestyle.

On weekends and evenings I'll throw the large in my pocket for any heavier tasks.

I also just ordered a Mnandi which should fill the Church, weddings and funerals gap nicely :D

Good luck choosing... ;)

Scott, my wait time is considerably less than yours, but in fairness my circumstances were very very VERY unusual to say the least. I would also normaly expect at least a years delay as well. I am sure you can find out the circumsances if you look around and feel free to e-mail me if you want specifics. Oh BTW I am at present on a 3 week training course with work, so I will have no way to scan or look at my e-mail till I get back. So if anyone e-mails me that is why the delay is in effect. Sorry:(

Oh and yes it is a small dark Walnut model.:D

The small.

No.

You will find the small very much like your Camillus EDC, except, of course, it's a Sebenza.:D

It's all a matter of personal preference. I have more control with a 3 inch blade. All the knives I carry the most are no longer than 3 1/8" in blade length. Also, the smaller knives give you more/easier carry options.
Get what works best for you.

I usually just carry the small sebenza around as I work in a corporate environment and only the most brain-dead of people would consider it a "weapon". I also have the large sebenza but its largely been retired from active carry.

Maybe I'm in the minority here, but I don't find the large to be all that large. I consider myself to be reasonably medium-sized at 5'11" and 175 lbs. with average sized hands. The 3.5" blade is just about ideal for day to day tasks.

I believe it is all about which size works best for you. I work in a store all day and the small is the perfect size for me.

I agree with Paul...better control on the small. More than enough knife for most circumstances.

I finally got em' both. :D
IMHO they each have their place and fill a need. They are a fantastic knife. :)
LOVE em'................ :p

Someone said the small would do 90% of what the large would do,and I seem to agree.I farm and carry the large alot, but a razor sharp knife will do BIG jobs.I sure like carrying the small better and have not seen where I need the large unless you have big hands which I don't.Would like to get a small classic some day.
