I started my becker collection small with a bk11 and a year later have two 16s, two 7s, and a 9 on the way after seeing 91bravo's new acquisition. I have been using a lansky turn box for my pocket folders but feel it may be a little small for my 7s or future 9. So I am looking to upgrade maybe a work sharp, wicked edge or edge pro. Leaning toward the edge pro. What do you guys sharpen your large blades with?

I use a variety of sharpeners. Worksharp, worksharp ko, stones, ceramic rods ect... If my blades have been heavy damaged usually by striking a rock when I'm cutting brush low to the ground. I'll use the worksharp. It also puts a convex edge on the blade. Most of the time its just a touch up with a medium india stone and a ceramic rod. Hope this helped. Really knowledgeable Band of Brothers here. One or more will chime in .

Do you worry about the work sharp creating to much heat?

Not at all. I pass thru rather quickly, wait and pass thru the other edge. Been using it for about 3 years. The KO edition has 3/4 belts and is variable speed you can control heat better. But again I have never had a problem with my edges or retaining an edge.

I mostly use a Spyderco Sharpmaker. All you have to do is hold the knife straight up and down and draw the edge through to the stones alternating sides. I highly recommend this set up! Also I'd advise getting the diamond rods to upgrade the system for those times you need to remove a lot of material. For field use, I like the DMT diamond sharpeners.

Thanks Bill for the heads up on the sharpmaker. I'm always looking for ways to improve.
Thats what I was saying TP9. Bill Siegle makes his living knowing knives.True professionals are answering your question. Ya just gotta love it.

This worked better for me when I was re-profiling on the SM:

If it was me now I'd use the WorkSharp..

I usually freehand on a Norton Fine India Stone....I have several of these and they go in the dishwasher when loaded up and they leave a great aggressive edge.. But, like Brother Bill Siegel I have a Sharp Maker and I use it...... when feeling exceptionally obsessive I have a KME rig which is the best iteration of the original Granpa Ray system...... and not to forget When feeling lazy the 2x72 Variable speed belt grinder is fast and can make a dandy sharp edge(6micron convex anybody?)......... e

Thanks to all for the input, looks like I can save a little money and just buy a spyderco sharpmaker for my needs. But since I had planned to spending more on a sharpening system, I should use that savings to buy another knife don't you think.:D
