Does anyone have a source for cylindrical files in sizes larger than 1/4"? I'm looking for a file in the 1/2" range, and would prefer a cylinder to tapered. Thank you for any information. :)

Raymond, thank you! Even if they don't have what I need, I expanded my file vocabulary so I can search on a couple more keywords. Nice site, I bookmarked it! I may well end up giving them a call. Thanks, again.

Find a Nicholson dealer, here is a link to their round file catalog page.

Thanks, Jim! I got excited when I found a 3/8" chainsaw file in MSC. They don't carry them anymore, but told me they were made Nicholson. With the link you just gave me, I was starting to get hopeful, but it seems they don't offer them anymore that large. Thanks for the link, though, I learned more.

Another name for cylindrical files larger than Chainsaw files is rat tail files. They usually have a coarser rasp and taper towards the end.

Mike big chain saw files went out with big saw chain but never were 1/2"
not to say they never had big round files, just wasn't use for saw chain
7/32" is about the bigist you'll find made,, for saw chain 3/8 and 404
pitch chain, havester chain about 1/4 max..
in the 20 year I've sold stihl and Jonsered it's the biggist I've seen..as said made as chain saw files.. rat-tail is more of a rasp as said here but i know you're looking for the straight round file.
good luck ck out this guy and see if he has come across something?

They don't list their files, Dan, just that they carry files. If unsuccessful in coming up with something online, I will give them a call. Thank you, sir!

I'm thinking I'm not going to come up with what I want. A half-round file will work for me if I can find one with a smallish radius. My other option to to get a bigarse crosscut file and grind the flats safe. I hate grinding too much on files, though, as many tend to warp when the stresses are relieved.

yeah I see they didn't list any but they say call them if you don't see it. thier dime:)
mike whatcha up to?

Working my way through one of those Japanese arrowheads Shakudo put up the tutorial for, Dan. Like so much of what I've lost with not being able to do much anymore, I find I can't file a danged matching pair of inside curves either (decorative scalloping, about 1/4" radius). :( I think I've lost most all of what little skill I had.

I need an adjustable radius file... :D

Hey Fitzo, can you post a link to the tutorial....I must have missed it.
Another place you should check would be local welding shops, I have quite a few large files, all from one of the shops here. problem is they are so coarse they can be a PITA to clean up after. :o

TIA Steve

I saw some half-round files somewhere that are not tapered...
I'll have to look around..Simonds makes a 4", but I don't know the radius..
Nicholson in 4", smooth, second, and bastard cut...
Try Shor International. They have an American pattern round in 1/2".
I also found some carbide files...

McMaster Carr, page 2500 in their catalog, all 1/2" diameter (p/n 4233A15 $8.35) (p/n 4233A22 $9.52) (p/n4233A28 $10.38).

Jim

Thank you, Howie, and Jim!

I appreciate everyone's help! Thanks. I think I'll be augmenting my file stash today! I love files.... :D
