Large Doctor's knife with pen blade (not spatula)

Hi Guys,
My first post - My knife collecting days were mainly from about the age of 10 - 18, but I am really getting the appetite back after taking a look around and reading a lot on the forum. My fondest memory may be my large 2 blade Queen congress that was probably from the early 80's (now in a box somewhere at my parents place). I live in The Netherlands now, but want to dig out my collection and buy something new the next time I am in the States.

I really want now a new or new in box Doctor's knife, either Queen or Canal Street, but I don't want the spatula, and I would like to find scales in something other than the stag bone or birds eye of Queen that they offer now with the pen blade. I notice some Queens a few years old have the pen blade in pearl.

I like the present canal street stag bone, but it has the spatula - therefore, my question is - what is around from the last few years from Queen or Canal (sorry, I am not into Case) in some interesting scales? And I can't afford a custom right now, but the Ruple doctor's looks very fine. And if anyone can convince me that there is a better $80 or under doctor's than the Queen or Canal, I would listen, but from what I know now (which may not be a lot) I don't think it exists.

Anyway, thanks for any guidance you have.

How about the S&M Premier #7 English Jack? One can be seen here at the top right.

It doesn't have a flat rear bolster, but other than that it sounds like what you're looking for. If you like the bone, of course. It's not an original thought from me: I believe it's A.G. Russell that makes the comparison between this and a Dr. knife.

I've got one, and love all the little embellishments on the knife.

Again, I don't represent this vendor, just pointing out a good source.

That is some real advice! Thanks. it looks like an excellent knife and is definitely another option.

One question I have had is how is the walk and talk on these long-bladed knives? My old queen was so stiff and snappy the pen blade was always hard to even open. I really like this about the Queen when I remember it, since it was so solid. It seems like to me that the longer bladed knives may feel quite a bit looser than shorter blades, but I am just guessing.

And, will the 420HC steel rust if used as an EDC?

I wish I could get to a knife show. Ever hear of any good knife shows in Europe?

Yes, there's a few. Gembloux in Belgium (I don't know the '07 date), Knives 2007 in Bristol, U.K. in May, & at least a few others.

May I suggest you have a look around my other home, British Blades, as there's a lot of Europeans there & a fair bit of information on European shows.

You're welcome. Glad to help!

As far as the snap, the only example I have is the one I own, but it's just about perfect: Good snappiness without feeling like a bear trap, or threatening your fingers. It does seem a little larger than the 3 5/8" length would indicate, but then, I've been messing around with pen knives for a while.

420HC is an excellent rust resistant stainless, and will work fine for EDC. Almost what it was designed for.

Good luck with the shows! I live in the northwest US, and they're still few and far between here. About two dedicated knife shows a year within 100 mile radius. Some of the gun shows do knives, but at best a few tables.
