i was wondering if anyone knew the difference between the Fallkniven Thor and the Marbles Trailmaker, other than the obvious asthetic differences

The Marbles blade is "0170-6 high carbon Chrome Vanadium steel" and the Thor is made from "laminated VG-10 / 420J2" stainless.

I have some experience with VG-10 and impressed with the edge holding. And I have to say that I really like the "Thor" bowie alot. However, generally speaking, I would rather have carbon steel in a blade over 5" or so long. And I have yet to hear anything really good about 420J2.

It would be very interesting to see just how well the 420J2 laminate 'toughened' the blade though and I think I may have made such a request of Cliff Stmp once before myself. I wanted to see how it compared with the Cold Steel Trailmaster and possibly Swamp Rat Battle Rat. My money is on the rat but like I said, I'm interested to see how well the Falkniven product holds up in comparission to it's carbon steel competitors.

Perhaps if there is enough interest, we can make it happen?!?!

I take it the Blade on the Thor is a VG-10 core, with the 420J2 wrapped around it? My only experience with 420J2 was a sword from UC when I was young, and it wasnt necessarily a "good" experience. I was under the impression that it was cheap steel. but perhaps the idea is to allow more flexibility, and make it less brittle?

That's exactly the purpose of laminated steels. Hard steel core gives edge retention while softer exterior layers make the blade less brittle.

And I have yet to hear anything really good about 420J2.

Now ya have! :D

420J2 makes for very good liner material in a folder, but as we all know, as a blade steel it really leaves a lot to be desired.

I might be wrong here, but doesn't it make more sense to give the core the flexiblity while giving the outer layer hardness to hold an edge better? I don't know how physics work on a knife, but the Katana is based on this principle.
