Large folder suggestions

I'm looking to buy a large folder with:

1. 4" - 6" blade.

2. Something decent to keep my fingers from sliding up onto the blade in a thrust.

3. Under $150.

Here are a few I've been looking at with the best prices I've found:

CUDA MAXX. D2. I like the Darrel Ralph design. ($120)

CRKT M16-14SF. AUS-8. I like the hilt. ($75)

TOPS CQT Magnum 747 Folder. 154CM. This one seems to have a good reputation, but a bit expensive for my budget. Can I get these cheaper anywhere?($160)

Are the price differences between these justified? Are there any others I should look at? What would you guys get?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

spyderco military
spyderco police
bm afck

cuda aftermath,

cuda maxx

you can get them used, or lnib or nib off the forums for some GREAT prices, post in wtb etc.

6 inch blade...(You did say "large") :

Cold Steel Vaquero Grande.
Cold Steel X2 Voyager.

Timberline Wortac, 3.9 inches is really the same as 4 anyway. And plus, you can get one and a Benchmade afck for your listed price range.

Bm AFCK or the 710, although I did fork out the $ for an Extrema ratio MPC- a bit outta the rice range- I have to admit the MPC is my favorite for a "big folder", I mostly rely on the two BM's as they are just sooo practical! the aFCK has more reach though, due to ist's longer handle. I really want a Spyderco police (in carbon fiber;) )to try one of those out. These are pretty much the only ones I have exp. with, but once I got 'em, I have lost interest in looking for any 'replacements' Good luck.

I think the Cuda Maxx is by far the best choice there. Ti handles, D2 blades, DDR design what more could you want? I'd have one if it wasn't for the pesky 5" blade length limit around here.

Si vis pacem, para Darrel. The quality of materials and workmanship on the CUDA Maxx is very high and the design is simple and strong. It is lighter than it looks (titanium!) sort of like a giant Sebenza.

I keep one in the kitchen for slicing & dicing, and carving anything big. It cleans off with a bit of soap and hot water through the open-back handle. The very sharp edge lasts a long time.

Good deals available on our sales and trade forums.

The Vaquero Grande is a tough knife with an intimidating design. Mine has taken a lot of punishment. The Voyager X2 is the hollow-ground clippoint version of the VG, but it didn't last. I beat it to death in a month. The edge was too weak.

You might like to check out that Benchmade 710. Elegant, at the lower end of your length requirement, but also a tough, sharp blade. It's got a great lock, fit & finish, etc.

I've gone 'old school' lately.

I just bought a SOG Tomcat. However, my GPS reads 'magnet north' no matter where I sit in the car.

Of all the folders I handled recently at Blade West, the Cuda MAXX seemed like the best choice in the size and price range you're looking at. If you're hoping for something a lot cheaper, then I'd say the CS Vaquero or Voyager or Gunsite are all pretty cheap, with fairly solid lock-up.

My choice would be the Maxx too, I saw these at the Blade show and was blown away. I preferred the bowie blade because it has a much higher grind, but if your primary concern is SD either blade shape would do the trick.

Thanks for all the great suggestions, everyone. I hadn't thought of some of those and I think any one of them really would have been a fine choice. In the end I think I agree with what a lot of you said, the maxx is just an excellent pick all around. Probably bowie style would be best for versatility. I'm going to look into that one first.

You'll have to let us know how you like it. :D

The Maxx is an awesome knife! Whoever described it as a Sebenza on steroids didn't take into account how much cooler it looks. ;)

Just got my new maxx today. I laughed out loud when I opened the package and saw how big this thing is! :D

The fit is precise, the lock is secure, and it looks cool as hell. Couldn't be happier. Another great design from Darrel.

Thanks again to everyone for the recommendations.

It is always great to see a knife nut happy united with a new purchase! Good luck with your new knife, and do let us know how well the knife works out for your needs!

Wow! Now I might have to put the AFCK in D2 on hold and pick one of those bad boys up. Seems like a lot of knife for ~$150!
