Large folders: Still looking. What else?

I'm still looking for the ultimate megafolder.

I've tried 3 supposedly good ones:

Camillus CUDA Maxx: Beautiful finish and craftsmanship. But it's tip-down carry and I prefer tip-up. Not very good ergonomics. Looks like a toy.

SOG Pentagon Elite II: Tip-up which I like. I had to grind away part of the handle to get at the previously recessed studs with any kind of speed. I HATE Zytel! Yuck! No guard to keep you from sliding up onto the blade.

REKAT SIFU: Thumb studs so tiny they're almost comical. Can't use those in a hurry! Lock seems rough by design. That's a lot of lock to overcome to get the knife open. Won't open smoothly because of lock design.

SO? What else IS there? I've got plenty 4" folders, but I want at least 4.5 but preferably 5".

Are there any more good mega-folders out there to try or am I S.O.L because I'm so picky?

i just got a crawford perfigo, 4.5" blade, has the stud and the belt clip, $275 from a forum member..........

but

they usually run around $450 or so. a GREAT knife, i have had sifu's, etc and this is much better than those knives imho. i would say the perfigo or the DDR maxx are the best of the litter. i also have a maxx, and between the 2, its a tough choice. i like the lock on the maxx, but the looks of the perfigo. what to do??

carried BOTH to dinner fri nite, lol

good luck!

I'm with Greg. If you want a high quality megafolder it probably is not going to be production. For the money of the three you've already tried, you could almost get a Darrel Ralph Aftermath. 5.5" of S30V and titanium!!!

How about a Cold Steel Vaquero Grande? The fully serrated blade is 6 inches-long, with an over-all opened length of 13 inches!..

You can always go all out and get the Mad Max Gibbs I think the blade is 7.7 inches:eek:

The Kasper Folding Fighter is sure a handful of knife. More belly to the blade than any of the stuff you're talking about for better slicing.

Just an idea.

Customs. A Laci Szabo folder - 7" blade. A Laci Szabo balisong - 5.5" blade.

Production. S.W.A.T. balisong - 5" blade.

I can't speak for the RAD but I have both those balisongs, and the Szabo is scary. It is massive, sharp, totally mirror-finished, and weird to hold. Not an every day carry. The S.W.A.T. is a razor. The blade is thin and holds a nice edge. It wasn't too sharp near the tip when I got it, but I took care of that.

How about the old model Al Mar Sere, 5 3/4" handle with a 4 1/4" blade, nice big guard, so big it looks like a display knife and too heavy for a clip.

I own a SIFU, MAXX 5.5, CS Voyager 2X (with 6" blade and no serrations) and the Tops Magnum. If you are looking for the meanest looking, toughest one, buy the Tops.

The Maxx is far better looking and slicker, but the Tops is the best tough mega folder, in my opinion. The Tops won't win any beauty contests, but it is one tough hombre. However, don't think you can carry it in your pocket. It is simply much too large for that.

Yup, the KFF is a great one...though it looks small next to this DDR Aftermath :)

then again, both of those would look like toys next to this Bud Weston "Texas Mini" with 8" blade!! (got to handle it at the last CKG show...too bad it didn't have a pocket clip!)

What do you want it for? Is it just to have a coll big folder or do you want it for serious work? Nothing wrong with either, but it helps to know the intended purpose.

It's going to be for a defensive knife.

I'll try the larger Cold Steels and I'm also going to put a One-Armed Bandit on my SIFU for better opening.

fulloflead,
Be forewarned that the CS mega-folders are Zytel handled. Great texture on'em though.

The TOPS Magnum has a 4.5" blade doesn't it? That looks like it would fit your requirements.
