Large folders with pocket clips

The work I do every day requires a medium to large sized knife. The knives myself and the guys that work for me use take an absolute beating. Some get broke but more get lost. I personally usually carry a fixed blade to avoid the breaking but my guys prefer folders with pocket clips. Several of them carry the large Buck 486 buck lites, and they are pretty inexpensive if they do get lost. Just looking for any suggestions on other large folders with pocket clips. Price can vary as some of them like cheapo's and some of em dont mind spending some cash. But either way they like em big! Your thoughts?;) - Joel S

I think you're going to have a hard time finding a tougher folder per dollar then the bucklites. Maybe the Avid series?

OR CS lawmen.

EricV You may be right, you get a lotta bang for your buck when you consider what your getting and what your paying for it, and to be honest they hold up pretty well.. The Avids have served me well but only problem is we end up in so much mud a lockback seems to work much better than a liner lock. Thanks!

I get that! I also deal with alot of mud and liner locks do stink for that use. A frame lock holds up much better! Maybe kershaw salvos?

How about a Buck 110? The belt sheath would keep it where it needs to be, and it's one hoss of a folder that won't easily break. Basic 110 starts around $40 i think

The Benchmade 275 Adamas has a low rider clip. And the knife will handle anything you can throw at it.

Going to assume you won't be buying these guys $100+ dollar knives, so....

Also, not sure on your definition of "large". But the average person would probably consider the Ontario Rat1, or Spyderco Tenacious to be large. And those can be had online in the $30 dollar range. True, both are liner locks, but well built. If it's treated like a folder it should be fine.

If you need larger, there's the Spyderco Resilience with a 4.25" blade. And I think still cheaper than the larger ColdSteel knives?? Though I'm admittedly not up to date on CS prices. If they are in your price range you can't go wrong.

Any of the new large or extra large Cold Steel Voyagers.

I would go with a 2011 Voyager as well. That lock is solid, and you'll have a hard time finding bigger knives with a clip.

+1. When someone says large pocket knife Voyagers are the first thing I think of. You can choose from a selection of blade shapes.

Take a look at the kabar large dozier folder (model # 4071). the 3.6" blade is made out a pretty thick slab of AUS-8, and the knife will run you around $25-$30.

Off the top of my head I think of the Ontario Rat-1, Utilitac, any of the Byrd series with stainless handles, quite a few Kershaws... Cold Steel knives are always a let down to me so I can't suggest them. The Bucks already mentioned are decent.

Get yourself a CS Rajah 2. It comes with a pocket clip for both sides of the handle. Mount them both and you can switch back and forth between left and right pockets. Very tough knife.

CS Recon. I just got the new spear point Recon, 4" blade, incredible strong triad lock. Costs about $70.

I like my Byrd Cara Cara 2's. I prefer the feel and weight of the FRN but the G10 has a better lockup. You can get either for less than 30 bucks. :D

cold steel pocket bushman? just as good as a fixed blade and cheap to boot

I think CRKT makes some tough knives for good prices. I bought these 2 to play with- the M21/gray was bought new, the M16/black was bought used and has been well used. After playing with these it is hard for me to imagine that there are other knives out there that could possibly be tougher. Something I've just discovered is that CRKT has some older models that can be bought very cheaply, probably under $20. These are the Hammond Cruiser and the Crawford Kasper. They are big and look like they would be as tough as the KaBar Dozier and maybe the Rat 1.
