Hi all,
Finally after lurking in the back round for a few months, I have a legitimate reason for my first post...
I'm looking for a heavy duty folder with a blade length around 4 inches.
While this knife wont get a lot of constant use, it does need to be 100 percent reliable and dependable.
Features preferred would be : - non slip textured handles
- Aggressive choil
- drop point blade with combo edge
- one handed opening
- Easy to use with gloves on

Yes my ideal knife you say would be the Benchmade Ruckus. While this is exactly what I want its not quite that simple... I could import one myself, but there are restrictions here ( New Zealand) on carrying folding knives with blades larger than 4 inches therefore I could possibly run into problems at customs. Buying Benchmade's locally is simply ridiculous ( a BM 551 with 440c blade still sells for NZD$200 !!, the local supplier prices Benchmade's out of most peoples reach, while Spyderco, Kershaw, Cold steel etc are still relatively affordable...

Any suggestions appreciated.

Bo

What are you using it for? As long as you're not chopping down trees or prying nails with it the Spyderco Military is an awesome knife.

I'd be putting it to use as I heavy duty camping knife I suppose. I'm still I somewhat cautious when it comes to using line lockers in Heavy duty roles (I've been bitten before..) so I'd me a bit shy of the Military.

Sounds promising, Kershaw seem to have a good presence over here. Will have to see if they are available locally.

I'd got with the Spyderco Chinook III. It has a very strong lock, works well with gloves one, easy one hand opening, nice choil. You might want to check out the D'Allara Drop point as well.

It's also hard to go wrong with the Kershaw ZT lineup.

The ZT 300 does not have a choil or a combo edge. On the other hand the Military has pretty much all your requirements and costs half as much as the 300. The liner lock is incredibly strong on the Military.

I would go for the ZT0500. It locks up almost as strong as a fixed blade. ZT 0300 is a monster as well. Someone mentioned Lone Wolf Harsey T2, I have one of those as well and it is a nice knife but not in the category of really strong and solid like a ZT IMO. ZT 0205 is sweet as well.

I think we can work this out. Send me a plane ticket to Hawaii and I'll give you a Benchmade Ruckus for less than $100.00 no matter what the currency is. We'll meet up there and finalize the details.

... Funny you mention the Dejavoo, I know of one for sale locally at a very good price, only plain edge though. Any one got any thoughts about the Spyderco Manix...
One good thing about New Zealand is there are still a lot of discontinued models about, I purchased a Vg10 Calypso jr dated 2000 from my local less than two months ago.... the flipside is it obviously takes a while for us to get the latest models..

why not just get an Endura 4? good steel, good lock, light weight, low price. the strong tip, flat saber grind and skeletonized liners make it a tough workhorse of a folder, and at only ~ $50 you shouldn't be afraid to really use it. I EDC one and its plenty tough enough to accomplish any task you should ever expect a folder to do (I've used mine to cut sections of 0 AWG battery cable in an emergency). I can understand not trusting a liner lock (although the military has one of the sturdiest liners around) but if a lockback isn't tough enough for the task, you be better off just getting a small fixed blade like a RAT RC4 or something similar.

you could get a mini rukus which isnt much shorter/smaller if 4" is tops.

the ZT's are a little bigger/heavier style vs the rukus, just depends on what ya want.

I'd suggest a benchmade 710, the blade is 3.90 inches
You can get a 710SBKD2 if you want part serrated.
I'd get it in from the US via New Graham.

Regards
Dave

The only real Large Folders I have these days are a ZT0300 and a Cold Steel Pocket Bushman. The Pocket Bushman does not have a Combo Edge... Both knives are Big Robust Tough Knives at different ends of the dollar scale!!!
