i was just wondering, how do you suggest sharpening a larger knife close to 9 or 10 inches? im used to sharpening around 3-5 inches and im just wondering how the larger ones should be sharpened

+1 for the belt grinder. Then I finish it off on a stone. To off the Burr, then strop.

The few times I've sharpened Machetes, I used a mill bastard file and followed up with a medium grit stone (around 600-1000 grit). Works great if you don't have access to motorized sharpening equipment.

Weird as it is, I use a spyderco sharpmaker as a benchstone for pretty much everything except recurves... It's not hard and is actually pretty convenient, I have all the stones for it from diamond course to super-fine... I can put a good edge on anything with it in minutes :)

Note: my longest knives are at 10" (blade) and my longest machete is only 14" so I can't say if it would be much harder with a 22" machete or larger :)

I have used my Edge Pro if I do not have to remove any large amounts of metal due to nicks. If I do I start with the large file and then reset the angle with the EP but this is only because I took my grinder down and stored it for some extra room.

I use a 1x30 belt sander with sharpening belts (or files if doing it manually like on my hay saw/knife) and a coarse/fine DMT Diafold when out in the field. :)

Another vote for the belt, does it fast, does it right. A convex on a chopper like that doesn't stick as easily, and lasts longer than a V.

I've used a file and a kitchen steel, a puck stone, a belt sander - all steady improvements - but the best results I've gotten are from taking some 3x21" silicon carbide belts and gluing them to a few bases. They wind up around 18" long. 80, 120, 400, 800 grit and some strops the same size. I sharpen them up just like I would any other knife. The powered beltsander works very well too, but my bevels turn out a lot nicer and uniform doing them by hand. Large kitchen knives are very easy to do with this setup.

any recommendations for a puck stone? i think it would be best for my colleagues Kukri which he is asking me to sharpen with a lansky system-hmmm dunno.
cheers.
