Boys and girls, I would like to get ahold of a knife that would hold an edge against splitting kindling for a campfire, and still be sharp enough to use around the campsite to fix/serve dinner. If I understand what is being said about Busse, I do know they are what I would want, but budget don't allow that right now. any suggestions?

Take a look at the Kabar Camp Knife. I believe this one will do all you ask and its a bargan price wise too. The Kabar Large Bowie is also a steal for good steel. One other may be the CS Black Trail Master with carbon steel. It goes for about 75.-85 dollars.

ontario RTAK, Fallkniven A1, scrapyard dogfather, uh i will think of more...

linder machete 12 -14" would work great. way thicker than most machetes chops great with its convex edge, and its stainless, wich i prefer for food prep. high carbon leaves a funky flavor on a lot of fruits and veggies IMO.

Right now you can get a Scrapyard Yard Hook for $120, at the Scrapyard website: http://www.scrapyardknives.com/knives.htm

It's got a seven inch blade, but makes a great chopper due to the thick blade and forward balance.

The steel is SR-77 which is based on S7, which is commonly used in jackhammer bits. Very tough and well suited to chopping and holding it's edge.

I own the Yard Guard, which is the same as the Yark Hook, only without the hook, and this has been my experience.

You can also get the Dumpster Mutt LE at the SY website right now, but that has a 5" blade and it sounds like you are looking for something larger.

Cold steel Kukri machete $15.00  You can't beat it for the $$$$ ;)
Also check out the Ontario 12" machete, they are also good for about $20.00
