Large Plain Sebenza or Darryl Ralph EDC

I know that there are a few of you out there that have both and I would like you opinion.

I am considering a purchase of one of these knives for my every day carry. I know that the Darryl Ralph cost more and is a custom knife and that I can probably get the Sebenza a lot sooner, but I don't think I'll mind waiting and paying more if I get the right knife.

It will be a hard use knife as well as a general camping knife. Having never seen either, I would appreciate your comments on how well the respective knives are built and how they will hold up to the uses I mentioned.

Thanks in advance,

S.

Personally, if I could afford it, I'd go with a Darrel Ralph custom. His designs are much more ergonomic than the Sebenza. I owned a plain Sebenza before, and although it's a great knife, I traded it for some high-end production folders.

Completely putting the fact aside that I happen to have a DDR EDC for sale at a terribly low price in the correct forum...I think you should go with the EDC :D

Its an extremely hard a** knife, built to take a lot of punishment. The biggest selling point to me was the handle, one of very few that I can honestly say gave great grip and comfort. After I got the knife, that recurve taught me real quick just how superior it was at cutting.

Tough choice. Between the EDC and Sebbie, I'd go with the Sebbie. Now if you're thinking Apogee, well THAT would be an even tougher choice.

As the owner of multiple examples of both, here is my experience. The Sebenza is simply a kick-ass folder. Built tough, great blade shape and superior edge geometry and steel. The EDC is built with the same basic philosophy but improves on it in terms of blade steel (420V) and ergonomics. Initially I owned an EDC Ti frame-lock and actually slightly favored the Sebenza over this version for some unexplainable reason. Ultimately I sold the EDC. I recently acquired a carbon fiber version of this same knife that is absolutely spectacular! I feel it doesn't just better the Sebbie, but actually blows it away. The blade is a two-tone beauty with a nice thin edge and it cuts like a laser. The fit and finish is simply flawless. Smooth action and a tight lock-up courtesy of the thick stainless liners. It is also much more attractive than the Sebbie.

So ultimately my recommendation would be a carbon fiber EDC. You will pay considerably more for it, but get a better knife IMHO. The Sebbie is cheaper and I feel that it is a great enough knife that everyone should own one. Or you could buy one now, save towards and buy the other one down the road, keep the one you like best and sell the other for a small loss. Or keep both like me :D

Most definitely, the EDC.
Relative to the discussion, I've got a small Sebenza, an integral medium Apogee, and a CF EDC-all are great knives.
Lately the EDC is getting carried 7 days a week, while the others sit at home (sometimes carry the Apogee IWB, though, or the small Seb clipless in the pocket or sheath, but the EDC is always on me). I have a BM 710HS that is too beat up to sell, and planned to keep carrying it for work. It sits at home, too. EDC does it all.
I'm plotting and planning the possibility of another EDC, but want to see how I like D2M (got an ArcLite coming, hopefully soon) compared to 420V before making any decisions.
The CF EDC fits my hand better than any other knife (folder or fixed), and has the most useful blade of any I've used. Doesn't hurt that it's a great looking knife, either. I buy knives to use, and this one "takes the cake".
I have lost interest in other folders. That says alot, I think.

I'd go with the DDR EDC. I was the winner of the BFC contest in May and won a custom EDC. I have not received it yet, but I look forward to it.

The Sebenza is also top notch as you will hear hereabouts. But given a choice, $ notwithstanding, go with the EDC. :)

Yet another vote for the EDC! If a hard use knife/camp utility folding knife is what you are after, may I suggest Darrel's 4" EDC in carbon fiber? The blade is plenty big for most food processing jobs, and there is a full length steel handle spacer, which makes the knife lock up rock solid and gives great balance. The ergonomic handle feels very secure in the grip, no slipping forward or backward. Darrel hollow grinds the blades very thin, the 4" will certainly cut like a straight razor and is easy to keep very sharp. The recurve is a mean slicer!

DDR is asking $525 for the 4" EDC in either carbon fiber or titanium. IIRC a large, undecorated Sebbie runs for $325. Spend $200 more and get a bigger folder, custom made one at that. The wait for any DDR knife is certainly worth it.

If you can afford a DDR EDC, go for it. I dont think you'll be disappointed. Sebenzas are great using knives but I like Darrel's design (especially the handles) better.

You guys are killing me...

I think I'm going to do what Blademan 13 said. I'll order the Sebe now (fills my instant gratification needs as well as the camping trip in a few weeks) and I'll order and wait for the DDR EDC in Carbon Fiber. I'll let you know what I think when I get the knives.

I can't believe that in the short time I've been hanging out here how much money I've spent.

Thank you all for the great suggestions and your knowledgeable input.
