Hello everyone. I was just about to order the Buck 889 and then read reviews describing some problems with the liners.:( I don't know if this is a common occurrence with this particular model or just isolated incidents. I think it's a beautiful knife and was looking forward to getting it. Does anyone have any other suggestions for a large and durable folder. I was also considering the Kabar Mule (or Dozier). But I just thought the 889 is a much nicer looking knife, IMO.
I just got my Wally World Spydie the other day and love it. Great little knife. But I would be hesitant to use it for any cutting that required a LOT of force (because of the handle). Otherwise a fantastic bargain.

Check out the Boker M-Type. Very strong framelock. Big blade but thin enough to slice real well. Excellent materials.

I have a Kershaw Lahar. It's a Tim Galyean flipper design and I think it's great! It has a nice solid lockup, gentle recurve to the drop point VG-10 blade, and grippy G10 handles. I think I paid around $45.00 online for it.

I've had a couple of 889's and really liked them alot, one passed a spinewack test and the other didn't, personally i don't think it's a big deal if you pay attention to what you're doing. If you want a strong knife just trot on down to your local wally world and pick up a buck 110, pretty much bullet proof. no matter what people here say pick the knife you like the most, all knives have pros and cons. good luck and tell us what you got.

Spend just a little bit more and get the Benchmade 10100 LFK. Unique knife and huge 5.25'' clip point blade. Mine came super sharp. Gonna use it as a knock around camp/bacpacking knife.

I'll second the Buck 110. Heavy duty, in spades, and less than $30.00 at Wally World. Case Sodbuster might fill the bill, too, but it doesn't lock.

Buck 110 or Kabar Mule. I have a Buck 889, and although it folded with a light tap to the spine, I wouldn't consider it a failure. It is, after all, only a liner-lock. If you want a tough folder, go with a lockback. I've also heard good things about Benchmade's Axis lock, but I don't have any experience with it.

I liked my 889, it wouldn't pass a hard spinewhack, but I batoned it through some sapplings with no problem. I personaly don't trust any lock so as long as it keeps the blade from closing easily (gravity, removal from material being cut, ect.) it is good enough for me. The Ka-Bar Dozier lockbacks can be had for around $20-25 and are very solid. Also take a look at the Kershaw Vapor, $20 at Wal-Mart, framelock, full flat grind, all stainless construction. Makes a great beater but still cuts well due to the grind.

I wouldn't worry about hurting the handle on your Spydie, as long as your not beating on it.. One of the beefiest knives I have owned was the Cold Steel ultimate hunter.. They are built like a tank, a little heavy though

+1 on the Kershaw Lahar. I was hesitant about getting a liner lock, but the Lahar is very solid.

what abaout a kabar mule or RAT folder? like mine both
the kabar seems indestructable, the rat too
maybe spydie tenacious (don't have one)

I'd go with the Kershaw JYDII, or Groove.
The JYDII is both big and sturdy, the Groove is more mid size but still quite sturdy.

Agree! This knife is a great value and beats knives in the $150 price range
for quality.

Kershaw JYD 2 or Kershaw Lahar! Both are real nice for the money! GOOD LUCK! Kevin :D
