Here's a question for you.
I own a small reg sebbie, a mamorth ivory mnandi, and and umfaan that matches my sebbie.
To cut a long story short my wife has offered to buy be another CRK and I was wondering about a large reg sebbie and wondered if it was worth getting as I own a small one.
For some reason I don't like the look of the classic and if I opt for a wood inlay or a small with graphics then I would not use it in case I damaged it.
Or if anybody knows of anyone still selling umfaans that might be another good option.

I would get the large. I have both and prefer the large. I think it's a lot better than the small.

Agreed...go wtih the large. You'll really enjoy the usefullness of the size. It's not huge, but will get any job done the first time.

;)

Ask yourself if you like bigger folder.
the large sebbie is a bit much to carry as an EDC for some people.

You won't be disapointed with a Large Sebenza, everyone should have one!

I've never seen one in the flesh.

Large vs. Small Regular Sebenza... ;)

I hope it will help you to choose... Anyway, you can go wrong with a Large Sebenza ! :D

Louky,

Nice Laguiole!(the first one). Is that the 12cm with ivory? I just orderded an 11cm(3 3/8"blade) Prestige custom model from Alex last week. It will have stainless Damascus blade, satin finished bolsters, and premium horn tip handles. Of course the sheepherds cross and customary bee. I also opted for hand chiseled leaf scrole on the backspacer and half the blade. It should be ready at the end of Aug. After seeing your fine example, I can't wait. How do you like it? How tight is the action? Do you use it on a regular bases?

Thanks,

Blackend

I like the large best. My first was a small regular-great knife, just too small for a comfortable and secure fit in my hand for hard use.

I obviously wanted to write "you can not go wrong with a Large Sebenza" I'm sorry for this mistake...

Dear Blackend,

The Laguiole you are waiting for seems to be a splendid piece of artistic work. Show us some pictures when you receive it !
Mine is a semi-industrial model made by "Les forges de Laguiole" which is the only factory located in the Laguiole town (many are located in Thiers). It is indeed a 12cm handle model with a 10cm blade. The blade steel is 440C and the handle scales are made from boxwood. The bolsters are also made from satin stainless steel. The blade retention spring is hand engraved and ended by the famous fly.

I really like this knife. I use it mostly for cooking : bread, vegetables, fruits or meat, it cuts everything without any effort. The edge is very sharp and easy to maintain. The slip-joint system spring is very strong so the blade is firmly maintained in the open position... you just have to be careful when you close it ! :D There is no blade play and the tip is perfectly centred in the handle when the knife is closed.

I sometimes put this knife in my pocket during one of my "fields escape". I'm not afraid to use it for heavy works. The Laguiole design was proving itself for more than a century so you can trust its solidity and its efficiency.

Have a nice day !
;)

I just want to add a little something. I'm not a "small" person (1,87 m and 90 kg... what units do you use for size and weight ? :D ), but the Small Sebenza is my EDC since 2000 and I can say it fits my hand very well. If I was choosing the Small Sebenza it was because of its blade thickness. In fact, it is the same as the Large one. Like many other Sebenza owners, I think the Small can do 99% of the works a Large is able to do...

Thanks for the response Louky, and thanks for more fantastic pictures. You answered all my question about the Laguiole and I'm even more excited about the one I have coming.

Sorry to the other forum members; it wasn't my intention to change the subject. Back to the large Sebenza's. Which by the way I do have another one of those on the way. A Classic with Fireball stainless Damascus blade and black buffalo horn handle inlays!!!!!

If anyone out there has yet to experience a large Sebbie; make it your next purchase. You'll be glad you did.

Adi,

IMO the large sebbie seems much larger than the small when it is carried. Small is my EDC,though I like the large in the hand better for long use. Because I use my EDC for relatively short duration cutting chores, either the small or the Mnandi suit me quite well. Take a look at the side by side pictures and consider the difference in weight.

The large is a great knife, period. For each of us it depends on the size of carry we like. You might want to find another 3.5" folder in your collection, if you have one, and carry it about as a proxy for the large sebbie.

Go with the large regular or classic and you won't go wrong. My edc is a large regular Sebenza. I like the scallops because it feels firmer in the grip. The classic's framelock without the scallops is easier to use however IMHO. Whichever the large Sebenza is slim and no problem to carry. But then I gotta admit I like large blades. I don't have the small Sebenza.

BTW Blackend what made you chose the stainless firedrop black and white etch over the high carbon blued firedrop? Sorry don't mean to hijack the thread but am dying of curiosity since I am seriously considering a damascus blade.
