Large Sebenza for defense

Hi Guys,

I was wondering: do you guys consider carrying the large Sebenza as a defensive folder ?

It surely doesn't look like a defense folder to me.

I do carry mu small classic every time in my pocket, but for defense, I always carry another big one, like the Chinook II or BM806D2.

What do you think ?

It's very strong, quick to deploy, and stupid sharp. What else could you ask for? :) It also has the advantage of not looking like a defensive folder, if that is important. (it is to many folks)

I like the large Classic Sebenza for its' all around appeal. It is scary sharp, and has a bomb proof lock. It feels great in all grips, and can tackle any tasks that any other folders and many fixed blades can perform. One of its' best attributes is the non "TACTICAL" appearence. Imagine a jury trying to believe that you were not looking for trouble in a self defense situation with your BLACK CQC7 with skull clip. :D
Here is a good link to an article that examines this point:

I carry a large tanto Sebenza, which I think is as good a defensive knife as any folder, but I'm really not convinced a knife is the best defensive weapon. As a back-up, though, the Sebenza is tough and sharp and what else do you need? :D

I agree with Esav Benyamin. If you can't carry a gun-the knife is a nice equalizer though :D

RUN.......run like the wind! If you can't then the knife you are carrying at that precise moment IS your defense folder. If you are carrying the Sebbie then it will make a fine one, especially in the Classic pattern.

The large Sebenza is discreet, comfortable to carry and its maintenance is very easy, so you will not leave it at home and I think it is the first SD weapon quality : to be always carried ! In addition, the frame-lock is the strongest mechanism actually available. The handle grip is very secure and the edge is razor sharp. Some peoples are not thumb-stud fans for the one hand opening system, but after a few moments, the movement become totally natural.

For me these qualities are the ones needed for a good utility knife. But I don't have the needed training to use it efficiently for SD. If you are able to use a 3.5" bladed knife as a SD tool, I think the Sebenza is the relevant choice.

Have a nice day !

I guess that would include my BLACK KARAMBIT with a skull clip. LOL

Yup, the built like a tank Sebenza would make a great SD knife in a pinch.

The only concern that I would have about using a Classic or Regular Sebenza would be the possibility of breaking the tip off. . . . Which is much less likely to happen with the NICA tanto . . . the large is in my EDC rotation. I use it a LOT for utility.

While the Sebenza is a fine knife, it is not ideally suited toward self-defense for several reasons:

It's all metal handle can become slippery from sweat or blood.

It does'nt have much of a forward guard to prevent your hand from sliding on to the blade.

It's not ambidexterous.

But I'm sure it can be used to kill a person if need arise.

I used to carry a Spyderco Civilian when working in the really hard neighborhoods, but now I carry my "homegrown" Nordic Tomahawk" in a shoulder rig. Some of the places I have to go, to talk with people that doesn´t really respect life that much, makes me carry that "heavy" a load. When I´m just out and about, I carry a small or (when it gets here...) large Sebbie. If I have to stand and fight, it will be because my wife or children are there, and then I´ll fight and slice with what ever is in my pocket or on the ground. The Sebenza has a MBC rated lock, and that makes it good for defense... I guess..... ;)

ALIass,
I thought the MBC rating system was a Spyderco exclusive.
Did Spyderco give the Sebenza a rating?

But it's kind of hard to flick sebenza open...I'd rather take my mini socom for self defense but someone has said already: the best self defense tool is that you have in your pocket! So - if you are carrying sebenza it will propbalby your defense knive when the situation goes very bad.

But if I know about danger ahead, I'd take AFCK or LCC...
