Hey guys
Who offers (besides case) a large stockman with carbon blades?
What patterns are similar? I've looked at congress, but I don't need two of the same blade. I started carrying my buck 301 forum knife (two blade) and am enjoying it. I have a medium stockman from case but find it a bit small for my liking.

If you are talking about the 3⅞ to 4 inch closed length, then try to find a nice used Schrade USA 8OT. Their 1095 has a terrific reputation for a good heat treatment, and they are very solidly built.

If you want the larger 4¼ to 4⅜ inch size, then a Queen #49 in D2 or a Moore Maker #5304 in 1095 are great choices.

New:
Rough Ryder has a couple with T10 carbon steel. Supposedly "equivelent" to 1095.
The Classic Carbon (yellow handle) is 4.25 inch closed.
I like mine. no defects I can see. Cost is under $15, if memory serves. I think they also have or had a 3.75 inch sowbelly in the same series.
The Classic Carbon 2 series also has a carbon steel stockman.

I think the Boker Tree Brand has Carbon blades. (the Boker Plus and Magum are stainless.)
Bear and Son might make one.

Utica made a stockman with carbon blades, but you'll have to find one on the secondary market. Utica and Utica Kutmaster pretty much quit making traditional knives a couple years ago, from what I've see on their website.

In addition to the Old Timer 8OT and 34OT, you can also find a Imperial (Prov, RI or Ireland) (shell construction, but same blades as the Schrade and Old Timer knives), Utica, and Camillus on the seconday market. Some of the Sears Craftsman knives, Colonial (usually shell contruction), Frontier (made by Imperial, I think) Impco, Western (pre and post Coleman-Western and Camillus-Western) and Schrade Walden are other possibilities. If you go pre-war/pre-depression there's New York Knife Company, Hammer Brand, Robeson, Queen, Russell, and a few others. They can be/are "collectables" and sell for a higher price - if you can find one.

Hey neighbor!

GEC makes a stockman from time-to-time. The latest one was the 82 Dixie Stockman, which was very well received. You’ll have to find one second hand, however.

If you like the 301, you could find an older 3 blade stockman, in pretty good shape, with carbon blades.

I would go with Jeff’s recommendation of a used schrade 8OT. You will be hard pressed to find a better and more practical stockman than that. They are also easy to find for a good price. Expect to pay under $50 for an excellent or unused one, but if you are patient and a little savvy you can get them for half that or less. I’ve bought a lot of them in excellent condition for $10-$20.

Boker has a good selection of stockman patterns with various handle materials in carbon and 440C. Just make sure it says Solingen on the tang. All of the Boker knives I have seen have very good fit and finish with great walk and talk.

Schrade 8OT. There are usually a bunch of them for sale on the 'bay.... A GEC Dixie Stockman would be great, but you could buy several of the Schrades for what you would pay for the Dixe..... IF you could find one.....

Yes, I like the Böker Large Stockman too. Around 4"/10cm shut with rounded bolsters I find it an easier carry than the Big CASE. It's a screamer in the sharpness table too :D

Yes.... or the Henckels... both Boker and Henckels seem to be of comparable quality, which is very good. My Henckels is around 4" as well, very ergonomic.

For a good user knife, I like the ones made by the old Colonial Knife company, of Providence RI. Like Schrade The original company is no longer in business, but the knives are not hard to find. They were sold under the Colonial, Ranger, and Anvil Brands. Probably others as well.

O.B.

Just about every knife maker from years past made Stockmans with carbon steel blades. Queen, Western, Camillus, Schrade, Imperial, Ulster, Boker, Henckels, Case, Hammer, Kabar, Utica, and probably a hundred others. They can be had at all prices, and in conditions ranging from pristine to relic.
