Large Stockman-type and a step up from Case?

Howdy folks,

I've been on a Benchmade tear as of late, but the pace has slowed as I've acquired most of the discontinued knives I'm interested in.

I've got a Case Medium Stockman, Sambar Stag (I think) I carry with me everywhere, now looking for a larger version which is also a small step up in overall quality from Case. I think Case makes a fine quality knife, just looking for something a little unique is all.

Budget can be stretched to @ $500, less is always better, but what can be spent, must be spent!

Thanks,

Heekma

Look at Moore Maker and Carl Schlieper Eye Brand for very respectable stockman patterns.

For that amount you are willing to spend and to comply with it being unique, you might as well go the custom route.

$500 is large and in the custom range... i would guess mooremaker (5301 & 5302 would fit) is probably step above case.... about twice the cost. still way short of the OPs max.

I dunno though, a full custom 3 blade large stockman would probably run over that limit. I could be wrong though. I'd agree with the other suggestions though about some nice productions, for what my opinion is worth.

GEC has made a few "ranchers" lately, beefy and nice with 3-4 blades
may be a step up, to me they look like stockmans

i would say to confer with one of our mods like blues whom knows a ton about stocks. i've been through many of these inclinations to improve a edc & i believe you should go the custom route. certainly gec, eye , & mooremaker make excellent selections but i feel you have an itch that will only be satisified with a more drastic improvement.

Thanks for the replies guys, keep 'em coming.

I came across a post with some pics of a slip joint with S&M on the shield, but google searches of "S&M" have been less than successful, at least as far as slip joints go.:D

I'd like a blade with a little more beef if possible, I do like stout knives and don't mind toting around a few extra ounces.

Although I've had my Case for years, this is my first foray into "expensive" slipjoints. I know how much "expensive tactical" or "Semi-custom" folders cost, but what's the breakdown in price for production, semi-custom, custom and expensive custom slipjoints?

Best,

Heekma

heekma, like other's have pointed GEC: The Cattle Rancher 3 blade stockman with around 4½ closed length and very sturdy blades or Cattle Baron which adds a punch/reamer to Stockman. Various handles. I'am drooling over the Texas Yellow Rose Rancher myself.

Here is a tiny sampler of Great Eastern's wares. Look at Dennis Strickland's posts for many more. They are all over four inches, heavy cattle knives. No serpentines in their lineup. Very beefy in every respect. A step up from CURRENT Case knives? Yes. The GEC offerings are in stainless, and the Northfield and Tidioute are 1095. Some of us like them very very much.:)

That Cattle Baron (pictured) is one great knife. Heavy duty all the way and makes one heck of a work knife. GECs Cattle Rancher (three blade stockman) is also first rate.

Very nice knives tongueriver. Thanks for posting the pictures.

Custom could very well be the answer. However, like others have said, the great eastern cutlery knives ( also seen as tidioute) are hearty knives that would potentially satisfy your need. Also the Schatt and Morgan knives are large robust knives as well. Schatt and Morgan is the S&M you were referring to in an earlier post.

Queen Cutlery in Amber Carved Stag Bone ought not to overlooked.

Or be persistent and try and find a genuine Cripple Creek.

toungeriver that tuna valley is so much nicer to myself than the punch blade. i beleive that bloodred bone is the 1st in that blade pattern.1st choice for canoeing in alaska. that knife & a hatchet would do it all. thanks for the great pics.

This beautiful Ken Coats stockman (top knife) which I collected last year from him at the Guild Show sounds just like what you are looking for. It is within your price range (just) and is a beautifully made top quality custom.

Good luck with your search..........:)

Schatt & Morgan makes a 4 1/4 large stockman that is a beaut IMO.
